Synopsis[]
Caleb once again puts Kirsten in a difficult situation when he forces her to end his relationship with Julie. After yet another crisis with Ryan, Sandy and Kirsten question their decision to bring him into their home. Meanwhile, Ryan and Luke become allies in their quest to protect Marissa from Oliver. When Marissa discovers the truth about Oliver, a tense and dangerous confrontation occurs and Ryan does everything in his power to protect her.
Plot[]
Ryan is sitting out on breakfast when Sandy reveals that Dr. Kim suspended him and might possibly be expelled. Ryan tells Sandy he isn't sorry because Oliver admitted to him that he tried breaking them up so he could get to Marissa. Sandy asks him why Oliver dropped the assault charges which Ryan wasn't aware of. Sandy doesn't understand what's happening and seems to be having a hard time believing Ryan's view of Oliver. Sandy tries to get Ryan to explain it to him but Ryan feels like he won't be believed. Sandy tells Ryan that he needs to learn to talk before fighting. Sandy then tells Ryan that if he wants to stay in the family, he is not allowed to go anywhere or see anyone until him and Kirsten think it is okay.
Ryan is reading and vividly bored in the pool house. At school, Marissa and Summer are talking about Ryan punching Oliver. Marissa says how Ryan needs to talk to people instead of fighting. Summer argues that Ryan had to have a reason to which Marissa says how Ryan thinks Oliver is in love with her. Summer also thinks so and Marissa defends her friendship with Oliver. Marissa tells Summer about her break up with Ryan which Summer is really taken aback by, but is glad they are both single. Summer tries to find a day she can hang out with Marissa but Marissa seems to be pretty booked. Anna and Seth start to worry that Kirsten and Sandy might kick Ryan out and she asks him how Ryan is. Seth tells her he hasn't spoke to him and that Anna doesn't know Ryan at all when they run into Marissa and Summer. The interactions between all four of them are awkward. Marissa asks Seth if Ryan is okay when Oliver jumps into the conversation. He has a busted lip still that Marissa points out. Oliver begins to flirt with her and Summer gives him a questioning look. Anna, Seth, and Summer notice how happy Oliver is which Summer says is because he has Marissa all to himself now.
At Kirsten's office, Sandy asks Kirsten if he made a mistake in taking Ryan in. Kirsten argues that Ryan is a good kid but they will work it out. They are suddenly interrupted by delivery guys who are renovating the room and Julie walks in. Julie is redesigning the office and that she got permission from Caleb. All of Kirsten's furniture is removed from her office. At the Cohen's, Ryan is staring at the phone and picks it up in hesitation. Back at Harbor, Oliver is trying to convince Marissa to go away for the weekend when Luke joins them for lunch. Marissa will be spending the weekend at her mom's which Oliver says is right next to Ryan and is therefore not good for her. Luke retaliates saying that it is up to Marissa to decide that. Oliver then suggests that he could get her a suite at the hotel so she doesn't have to "think" about Ryan ... Marissa gets a phone call from Ryan and she hesitates on answering. Luke is concerned she isn't going to answer and Oliver says she isn't talking to Ryan. Luke then fires back asking if Marissa is still talking to him or if Oliver is going to continue doing all the talking for her. Luke angrily leaves them but Oliver is just as angry and tells Marissa he gets "overprotective." Marissa leaves without her phone and Oliver goes through it and listens to Ryan's message he left for her. Ryan said in his message to Marissa about talking after school in the library and Oliver erases the message.
Anna and Seth are talking about what they will do after school when Summer runs into them and asks to go with them to the comic book store. Seth is surprised she would want to go but Summer insists she likes comics. Summer notes how Marissa turned her down to be with Oliver for the afternoon. Seth is considering going home to check on Ryan when he sees him crossing through the parking lot. Seth stops him and asks why he is there when he is suspended. Ryan is freaking out because Marissa isn't taking his calls so he is meeting her in the library. Seth doesn't believe him which truly offends Ryan. Seth tells Ryan that he can't tell Marissa who she can and can't be around. Ryan tries to explain how unstable Oliver is, how another girl has a restraining order against him, and that his so-called-girlfriend, Natalie, doesn't exist. Seth tells Ryan that what he is doing will not make his case. Ryan leaves him and heads to the library.
As Ryan waits in the library for Marissa, Oliver comes in to tell him that Marissa isn't coming and that she asked Ryan not to call or see her. If Ryan does, she is going to get a restraining order against him which sounds a little too familiar. Oliver notes the things he has done that were to protect Marissa and twists it into something suspicious and crazy. Ryan says he would do it again which Oliver claims he could have pressed charges but didn't. Oliver warns Ryan and tells him to give up.
In the Cohen's kitchen, Kirsten has completely taken it over and scattered her work throughout. Kirsten tells Sandy how she has no place to work due to Julie's redesigning which is driving everyone crazy. Sandy encourages Kirsten to talk to Caleb which she feels she can't do. Ryan walks in for coffee and Sandy and him exchange a look. Kirsten thinks they are being too hard on Ryan and Sandy disagrees. Julie comes to the door hoping to carpool with Kirsten and Sandy pushes Kirsten to get ready. Julie waits for her in the backyard and Ryan is staring. Julie asks why he isn't at school and Ryan tells her with the assumption that she hasn't talked to Marissa in a while. Julie tells him that she is spending the weekend with her and also assumes that Marissa hasn't some to him in a while. Ryan tells Julie about his concerns with Oliver and Marissa. He tells her about what Oliver has done so far and it's hard to tell if Julie considered any of it as Kirsten and her head to work.
At school, Oliver asks Marissa again to go away for the weekend which she turns down. Oliver assumes Marissa doesn't want to hang out with him and she reassures him saying she would honestly blow everything off. Oliver says they should and Marissa hesitates. Marissa agrees and says she wants to be back for dinner. Oliver wraps his arm around her shoulder and walk out of school while Seth and Luke see them go off. Luke says he doesn't trust Oliver and Seth says that he sounds like Ryan. Seth asks Luke if he has met Natalie which Luke denies. Seth tells him that Ryan thinks Oliver made her up and Luke suggests he could ask some friends that he has at the school Oliver transferred from. Seth thinks it is crazy but Luke argues that that is Oliver.
Kirsten talks to Caleb about Julie. Caleb admits that Julie is driving him crazy since she always is around. Kirsten is shocked he feels this way but tells him that he hired her. Caleb asks Kirsten to talk to Julie and that it has to end. Kirsten realizes that he wants her to break up with Julie for him. Ryan continues to rot in the pool house when Seth walks in. Seth chooses not to talk to Ryan about what is going on and they share a few jabs before he leaves to join Summer and Anna. Seth is reading and flipping through a comic book with Summer while Anna sits alone. Sandy walks in and sees this and asks where Ryan is at. Seth is talking to Summer about comic books she should start reading when Anna suggests an alternative. Seth starts to fight her on it when Sandy voices that he agrees with Anna.
Anna asks Sandy about his relationship with Kirsten and what the key is to a successful relationship when Kirsten arrives home with groceries. Seth asks Sandy if Summer can stay for dinner right in front of Anna and she leaves to help Kirsten. Sandy hits Seth over the head with a magazine asking what he is doing when Luke walks in. Luke talks to Ryan about Oliver and Marissa skipping school together and how he can't get a hold of her. Ryan asks if he knows where they went but Luke doesn't know. Luke tells Ryan how uneasy he feels about Oliver and what he found out from his friends at the school Oliver used to go to. Luke tells Ryan how there is no "Natalie".
Anna and Summer are setting the table for dinner and as everyone is sitting down to eat, Ryan slips out of the pool house. Marissa gets home next door when Ryan approaches her. Marissa is not happy to seem him since he went to Julie and she called the school looking for her. Ryan tries to explain himself but Marissa won't let him. Julie comes outside and tells Marissa to go inside. Marissa gets back into her car and drives away. Ryan looks up to see Sandy who was watching him. Marissa goes to Oliver's and asks to spend the night.
The next morning, Sandy brings Ryan coffee and a bagel. Ryan admits he shouldn't have gone next door and Sandy asks if he wants to talk. Ryan says no but Sandy pleads with him to so that he can help. Kirsten walks in to tell Ryan that Luke is there. Ryan tells Luke that Marissa doesn't believe him and that she ran away. Luke questions if she went to Oliver's and that they should go find out. Ryan doesn't think it would be any good since she refuses to listen to him. Luke says that she will listen to him and leaves.
At Oliver's, Marissa and him are talking about plans of getting away for the weekend. Marissa says how she would love to got to Paris which Oliver suggests they can somehow. Oliver tries to continue to convince her to get away so that it could just be the two of them when she gets a phone call. Luke is on the phone and tries to get her to listen. In the background, Oliver is trying to tell her to hang up and not listen. Marissa refuses to listen to Luke and asks her to let her mom know she is okay. Marissa hangs up the phone and Oliver gives her a very questionable look. Oliver still thinks she doesn't want to be around him and Marissa starts to feel uneasy.
At the Newport Group, Kirsten's office is finally done and she is very impressed by Julie's work. Julie says she wanted it to be a surprise and asks Kirsten if she heard from Caleb. Kirsten says no and starts rambling and Julie can tell something is up. Kirsten tries to speak but Julie already figured out that Caleb is breaking up with her through Kirsten. Caleb walks in and Julie stops him saying that he isn't even man enough to break up with her himself. Caleb apologizes and Julie says how she deserves better from him and Kirsten. Julie quits and storms out.
At the Cohen's, Sandy comes home to find Seth, Summer, and Anna watching T.V. Sandy can still tell how out of place and left out Anna is as Summer and Seth flirt with each other. Sandy asks to talk to Seth and they move out of the living room. Sandy tells Seth how much he hurt Anna's feelings by not talking to or including her and flirting with someone else right in front of her. Seth claims he was not flirting and refuses to talk about it with Sandy. Sandy lashes out about talking to his son about anything that is going wrong. Seth assumes that this has to do with Ryan which Sandy denies. Seth then says that if it is, Ryan will got to Sandy when he is ready. Luke goes to Marissa's to get her things when he finds Julie crying at the door. She gathers her things in her room and she talks to Luke about her life and how hard it has been. Luke offers to be someone she can talk to and they nearly kiss.
Marissa goes down to the lobby to find out if her clothes and things were dropped off yet by Luke. The stewardess who is helping her has a badge on with the name, "Natalie" and it catches Marissa's attention. Marissa asks if she knows Oliver and Natalie says that she babysat him when he was growing up. Marissa asks for her last name and she finds out it is Bishop, Natalie Bishop. Marissa gets back to the room pretty shaken up about what she just found out while Oliver was calling and freaking out that she left. Marissa reveals to him about what she found out and Oliver can't lie about it and the truth is revealed. Oliver tries to explain but Marissa says she needs to leave. Oliver viscously grabs her and begs her to stay and apologizes. He starts to have a meltdown and begins hitting himself. Marissa stops him and gets him to leave the room. She runs to her bag searching for her phone and calls Ryan. Ryan hesitatingly answers it and Marissa is frantically truing to tell him she knows. Oliver walks in hearing her with a gun and makes her give him the phone. Ryan doesn't know what is going on and Oliver gets the phone and hangs up.
The Cohens are setting things for dinner and Anna is rightfully upset with Seth. Seth tries to apologize but Anna reminds him that she is his girlfriend and Summer is his friend but he can't distinguish that. Ryan comes in saying that Marissa is in trouble and grabs the keys. Sandy asks him for the keys and Ryan says he thought he could go to Sandy. Sandy says he will drive. Oliver is pacing the penthouse saying how sorry he is to Marissa who is panicking and crying, asking him to put the gun away. He says no because then she will leave him and Marissa says she will have to leave at some point. Oliver assumes she wants to go back to Ryan and asks about himself. Marissa expresses her thoughts on their friendship and Oliver tells her he is in love with her. Marissa asks why he would want to hurt her and he says the gun is for himself, implying that if Marissa leaves him, Oliver will kill himself. Oliver tries to get Marissa to promise she won't leave when the phone rings. Ryan and Sandy are trying to call them but they don't answer.
Sandy approaches the stewardess asking to go to the penthouse but she won't let them. Ryan tries to explain and sees her name tag and makes the connection. Natalie lets them upstairs with security closely behind them. She knocks in the door, asking to be let in but Oliver doesn't let her. Marissa pleads with him and Oliver shushes her. They are about to leave but Ryan won't give up and yells for Marissa. Oliver is making her stay quiet so she says nothing. Ryan screams for her and she finally yells back at him, warning that Oliver has a gun. She starts crying even more as Oliver swings the gun around asking why she did that. Armed security burst through the door asking Oliver to put the gun down but he puts it up to his head. Ryan tells him to put the gun down and tries to talk him out of hurting Marissa or anyone else. Oliver claims that Ryan doesn't know anything about him to which Ryan responds stating he knows what it is like to be abandoned by your parents, friends, and have no one in your life who believes you. Marissa looks at him when he says the last part and Ryan tells Oliver he could get a second chance. Oliver reluctantly puts the gun down, security grabs him and escorts him out, and Marissa runs to Ryan's embrace as she apologizes over and over.
Anna and Seth are playing Jenga and Kirsten gets off the phone, letting them know Marissa is okay. Kirsten leaves to freshen up the pool house before they get back and Seth gets up to give Summer a call. Anna is distraught and she says she is leaving. Seth tries to stop her when Anna argues that his first thought is to call Summer. Anna breaks up with him as she doesn't feel like his girlfriend anymore. Ryan gets back to find Seth in the pool house. Seth tells Ryan how he blew it in being there for Ryan and believing him. Ryan says it's okay to which Seth retaliates saying it isn't okay because Ryan has ALWAYS had Seth's back ever since he got to Newport. Seth promises to never fail Ryan again and apologizes. Seth says how his breakup with Anna occurred and is offended that Ryan assumed Anna broke up with him. They return to their own banter and talk about what happened.
