Synopsis[]
Seth gets a job at the Bait Shop and turns to his boss, Alex, for advice on how to rebuild his relationship with Summer. Ryan has a series of mishaps with a new classmate, Lindsay, who becomes his Physics lab partner. Meanwhile, Caleb's legal issues threaten to leave Sandy and Kirsten unemployed.
Plot[]
Ryan is reading the paper with Caleb's arrest as the front page telling Seth how their grandfather is in a lot of legal trouble. Ryan says how Seth is proving Summer right about being involved in himself as Ryan stresses about his first day in AP Physics. Seth says he really needs to start making some changes with himself and continues to deny wanting Summer back. Sandy is driving Caleb back from his night in jail and how he is going to meet with some lawyers to take over his case. Sandy encourages Caleb to step down from the CEO position of the Newport Group and give it to Kirsten instead.
At Harbor, a new girl arrives and asks someone if it is okay to park where she did and the girls make fun of her. Seth and Ryan are ordering their coffees in the lounge and tells Ryan he will try to get Zach and Summer tickets to see The Walkmen since Summer loves them. Ryan takes his coffee and turns to spill it all over the new girl. He then elbows her by accident in the face and apologizes to her. He starts trying to pick up her things but she steps away from him and runs off, completely embarrassed.
Kirsten and Sandy try to encourage Caleb to step down since the company's future is at risk. The doorbell rings and Julie arrives. She apologizes to Caleb for not being there for him and Kirsten and Sandy step out. Julie says that when Jimmy went down, their marriage fell apart and she doesn't want that to happen between her and Caleb. She asks to help but Caleb says that Kirsten is taking care of it. Caleb asks to support them at home which is less than pleasing to Julie.
Back at Harbor, Marissa and Summer are realizing just how perfect Zach is. Summer tells her how impressed her dad is that she is dating a congress' son. but is hesitant in going because of the past lunch with Seth in The Shower. Marissa reminds her that Zach is not Seth and that it will be better. Summer is not so sure so Marissa assumes she isn't over Seth. Summer denies this just as Zach joins them. He apologizes to Marissa about Caleb who he read about in the paper. Summer is surprised that he reads the paper a lot and assumes that she is no longer interested. Summer says no and proceeds to invite him to lunch with her dad.
Ryan walks into his first class of AP Physics and the only available seat is the one next to the new girl he previously humiliated. Ryan accidentally hits her with his bag, once again, and she grows more irritated with him. The teacher announces lab partner assignments and Ryan just so happens to be paired with the new girl, Lindsay Gardner. Ryan and Seth ride over to The Bait Shop to get the The Walkmen tickets. They walk inside to find a worker listening to music who tells the boys that the show is sold out. She gives extra tickets to another coworker and says they get tickets because they work there. Seth offers to work there in order to get tickets but she refuses and tells him the horror of the job itself. She gives in and introduces herself, Alex Kelly, and tells Seth he is starting right away. Seth tells Ryan he is doing this for his friendship with Summer and how committed he is.
The next morning, Ryan is studying ahead of class with Sandy in awe of his new self. Ryan tells him how tough physics is and that someone is making things very difficult for him. Seth walks in hurting from his shift the night before and Sandy is also proud of him for getting a job. Kirsten walks in and tells Seth that Caleb's situation is being handled and as Seth is about to make it about himself, Ryan gives him a look. All of them start to wonder if Caleb were to go to jail how their lives would change considering Kirsten's job and their house.
Julie is trying to assure Marissa that everything will be fine with Caleb and it won't be a repeat of her dad. Marissa seems uninterested as all she really wants is to live with her dad again. Ryan walks into class and makes it past Lindsay without hurting her. Ryan asks to exchange numbers in order to work on the lab report but she tells him that she already turned it in. Lindsay goes on a rant about how she transferred to Harbor in order to get into Yale and misjudges Ryan on the spot, thinking he is a dumb jock. Ryan won't let up with it and tells the teacher that Lindsay handed in a lab report he didn't get a chance to contribute to. The teacher gives them back the lab report to redo and gives them an additional assignment but refuses to separate them.
Seth is working alongside Alex at The Bait Shop and she notices how much this job is out of his element. Seth reveals to her how he is doing this job to get tickets for a girl and her boyfriend so that he can show her he isn't selfish. Alex gets a call from her mom and Seth finds out she is 17 and got kicked out of three high schools. She tells him how she landed in The Bait Shop and how much she likes where she is now. Alex gives Seth tickets for the show and she tells him that Summer will see right through it.
Kirsten is making calls to prevent her dad from loosing his position at the Newport Group when Sandy walks in and tells her how he got fired from his law firm due to his connections with Caleb. Seth visits Summer and gives her the tickets for her and Zach to see The Walkmen. She thinks its a trick and he says he wants to do something nice for someone else and offers to be friends. Seth leaves Summer confused. Marissa is having breakfast with Jimmy on his boat and they talk about what has happened over the summer so far. Julie drops in to take Marissa home and Jimmy asks about Caleb. Julie says how Caleb only listens to Kirsten and Sandy and he encourages her to stand up for herself. Marissa says bye to her dad and leaves with Julie.
At Harbor, Ryan is attempting to work with Lindsay but she still is offering to do it herself. Lindsay continues to misjudge Ryan, thinking he was raised rich. Ryan finally lets her have it and tells her his history and how he came from Chino. Lindsay tells Ryan she isn't there to make friends and he says she is doing a pretty good job in achieving that and continues to work on the assignment. Lindsay finally agrees to split up the assignment with Ryan and thinks they should meet up to finish it. Ryan unwillingly agrees and leaves.
Zach is with Summer as she is getting ready for the concert and she tells him how Seth gave her the tickets. Zach is not surprised but asks why he did so. Summer says Seth is trying to be nice but Zach thinks he is trying to win Summer back. Zach asks Summer if Seth really was changing if she would get back together with him. Summer can't really answer so Zach tells her to go without him and to talk to Seth. Zach asks her to figure out her relationship with Seth in order for things to work. Summer is shocked by how calm he is and secure with himself. Zach says how they had so much fun over the summer and is okay with the fact that if they have done all they could with their relationship, then to let him know. He kisses Summer on the cheek and leaves.
Kirsten, Sandy, Julie and Caleb are celebrating Sandy getting fired since he can spend more time on Caleb's case. Caleb then tells Kirsten and Sandy how he has been talking with Julie about the fact that he decided to step down from the Newport Group and plans to appoint a new CEO. Caleb says that Julie will be the new CEO and this leaves Sandy and Kirsten shocked and very upset. Julie however is thrilled at the idea.
The Walkmen have begun their performance at The Bait Shop. Ryan is hanging out with Seth who is waiting for Summer and Zach to show. Seth spots Summer without Zach and he takes her to sit down. Ryan steps outside of the Bait Shop and spots Marissa sitting on a bench looking at the ocean. Ryan walks up to her and she says she is just there to support Summer and Ryan says he is there to support Seth. Ryan sits with her and they talk about Summer and Seth's relationship and noticeably it turns into a conversation about their own relationship. Ryan asks Marissa to go into the concert with him and he says how different things are now. She agrees and they joke about how his favorite band is Journey.
Caleb is trying to leave but Sandy pleads for how amazing Kirsten has been and how he could do that to her. Sandy says that Julie has no idea how to be a CEO. Caleb says how it's just a figurehead and that Kirsten will continue to run the show but Sandy says she won't be so willing to work for Julie. Sandy pushes Caleb to make up with Kirsten. Seth and Summer awkwardly sit together while The Walkmen continues to perform. Summer thanks him for the tickets when Alex asks Seth to clean up in the bathroom. Summer is confused and he reveals that he works there to get her the tickets. Seth says that he really wants to be friends with Summer and she says how sweet it was. They share a moment and Seth kisses Summer who immediately pulls away. She runs out and Seth goes after her. Seth explains that he didn't mean for the kiss to happen and Summer thinks he was just planning to get her back. Summer says he thought he was changing but Seth says he is but he just can't seem to be friends with her. Summer ends it there and walks away.
The next day, Seth tells Ryan how much he couldn't sleep and how badly he handled things with Summer. Ryan is in a rush to meet with Lindsay. Seth asks to talk more but Ryan has to go and leaves. Sandy finds Kirsten very upset about her dad's announcement and tells him how she doesn't plan on going back to the office because she doesn't want Julie to be her boss. Kirsten says she won't do very well not working as Sandy encourages her to take some time away. He then tells Sandy to talk to Caleb about it.
Marissa sits in her room alone when Seth walks in. He says that when he has a problem he needs to talk it out and already tried to with Ryan. Marissa decides to listen and he reveals how bad he messed things up with Summer. She says that he should try apologizing to her as a good place to start. Seth asks where Summer is and she tells him not to go yet and see her since she is having lunch with her dad. Marissa asks where Ryan is and Seth tells her he is doing physics homework at school. Caleb walks in to speak with Kirsten and he apologizes to her but isn't changing his mind. Caleb says that she is the new chief financial officer and that she will truly be in control of the company.
Lindsay tries to compliment Ryan's work but he isn't really having it. She then apologizes to him about how she misjudged him and was rude to him. Lindsay can barely get out the apology but Ryan also apologizes to her as well. They start flirting and banter as Marissa watches from a distance. She walks away, nearly in tears. Seth goes to speak with Summer but finds her having lunch with her dad and Zach, really getting along together. Seth rushes out before they see him and he finds Marissa sitting on the same bench from the night before. He sits with her and says he never would have thought they would have been the most loneliest people. Seth then says he at least never thought Marissa would be lonely.
