Synopsis[]
After Lindsay moves away to Chicago with her mother, Ryan is heartbroken and Caleb's confused. Seth, Summer, and Marissa invite Ryan to the local mall to get his mind off things, until they get stranded in the mall after hours. Meanwhile, Sandy tries to make amends with Kirsten by searching for her wedding ring or even a grand gesture that will take her back to when Sandy first proposed. Alex begins to learn that Marissa might not be as into her as she thought. Kirsten and Julie call an editor for their new magazine, Newport Living, but at the same time Julie's Riverside past catches up to her in the form of a former boyfriend with an incriminating video tape of her.
Plot[]
Seth knocks on the pool house door where Ryan resides in the dark and under his covers. Seth barges in and starts opening all the blinds and taking the covers off Ryan. He asks Ryan what he can do to help and Ryan asks for privacy. Seth tries to get him to go to the dinner but Ryan looses his cool and says that what happened with Lindsay is more difficult and unfixable. Seth understands as Ryan continues saying how a lot of people in his life continue to leave him. Seth leaves him alone and heads to the diner. Ryan gets up and starts packing a bag.
Kirsten gets coffee in the kitchen and pours some for Sandy but spills all of it. They seem a little out of sorts and Kirsten says they can't pretend that things with Rebecca didn't happen. Sandy assures Kirsten that nothing happened and notices she isn't wearing her ring anymore. Kirsten says she can't find it and Sandy is concerned saying she never takes it off. Sandy thinks it is down the sink and she says she will call a plumber the next day. Summer is at the diner and looking at a postcard but stashes it away when she sees Seth. They kiss and Seth says how concerned he is for Ryan. Summer says that they won't leave Ryan behind and are determined to cheer him up, possibly taking him to the mall and inviting Marissa. Seth thinks that there is still a chance for Ryan and Marissa to get back together. Summer says that Marissa is happy now.
Marissa is doing her and Alex's laundry but accidentally turned everything pink. Alex is upset and realizes Marissa doesn't know how to do her own laundry. Marissa apologizes and Alex asks if she has found a job yet. Marissa doesn't answer and says they should do something fun that day. Alex says how she has to work and they make plans for the night. Caleb visits the Cohen's and finds Sandy under the sink. Kirsten isn't home but at the office with Julie working on the magazine. Caleb tells Sandy how concerned he is of Lindsay's departure. Sandy apologizes to him and says he is willing to listen. Julie is upset that she can't edit her own magazine and Kirsten says it is because she has never done so before. They are waiting to meet with their new editor and Julie sees someone familiar outside of her office, looking for her.
Caleb continues to tell Sandy how he feels he messed up with Lindsay and how worried he has been with her. Caleb finally asks Sandy what he is doing under the sink and he says how he is looking for Kirsten's wedding ring. Seth walks in and starts making fun of Sandy. Seth goes into the pool house and finds it empty but he left a note. Seth runs into the house, grabs the keys, and heads out the door. Marissa is cleaning up the apartment after all of Alex and her partying festivities when Summer comes to visit. Summer asks her to go to the mall and Marissa is more than ready to go.
Seth finds Ryan at the bus stop who is waiting to go to Chicago, presumably going after Lindsay. Ryan says he wants to surprise her for the weekend but is planning on coming back. Seth then says that Lindsay has had enough surprises and suggests he gives her time. Seth asks him to get his mind off of it by going to the mall with him, Summer, and Marissa. Ryan agrees and they head off, joining Summer and Marissa. A salesgirl takes them to the back to pick out clothes for charity. Summer makes a joke and then her and Seth end up kissing right in front of an uncomfortable Ryan and Marissa.
Kirsten and Julie are looking at options for the cover, all of which include Julie's portraits. Kirsten wonders if there should be pictures of Newport instead of just Julie's face when their new editor walks in, Carter Buckley. Julie sets some ground rules with Carter and says that she doesn't want outsiders telling her how to organize her magazine. Carter says he really doesn't want to be there either and wants to make it as painful as possible, leaving Julie and Kirsten speechless. Sandy and Caleb share a drink and thank each other for their support. Sandy says he regrets hurting Kirsten when Rebecca came back and notices the toll it took on his marriage with Kirsten. They start talking about her ring and he says how he won the ring in an arcade game in San Francisco. Sandy and Caleb laugh about the fact that she walk around with a plastic ring on her finger for years.
Alex gets home looking for Marissa and calls her cell phone but she doesn't answer. Seth and Summer continue to make out and flirt with each other in the back of the mall as Ryan and Marissa continue gathering clothes. Marissa asks Ryan how he has been doing without Lindsay and Ryan says he hasn't been doing so good. Marissa tells Ryan she's been happy to be out of the house and how she moved in with Alex. Seth tries to get out but the door is locked from the inside. They all start to freak out and try to call for help but no one has service. Summer pulls out a bobby pin and Seth tries to pick the lock but ends up breaking the pin. Summer spots a vent that Seth and Ryan decide to climb through. Ryan thanks Seth for getting him out and Seth falls down and out of the vent, finding a way out haha.
Marissa and Summer sit down and catch up. Summer says she feels really happy with Seth and thinks things will be different this time. Summer asks Marissa if she feels connected with Alex just as Ryan is about to climb out of the vent, he stops to listen. Marissa says that the only person she really felt that with is Ryan. Summer asks if it is weird being in the mall and spending time with him and Marissa says no. Summer then asks if Marissa thinks about getting back together with Ryan to which Marissa says she couldn't do that to him now since Lindsay broke his heart. Summer asks Marissa if she misses him and Marissa says EVERYDAY. Seth opens the door and then asks where Ryan is. They all look toward the vent and see Ryan. Marissa looks at him and realizes he heard her conversation with Summer.
The Core Four or Fantastic Four go out into the mall to find it closed. Ryan and Seth try to find an exit but Summer insists they hang out and spend the night. Summer calls her parents, Seth and Ryan call their parents, and Marissa tells Alex she is thinking of spending the night at her mom's. Summer grabs masks and suggests they all play hockey together. All of them suit up and gear up and play 2v2. Marissa and Ryan play against Summer and Seth. At some point, the ball goes down the escalator and Marissa and Summer race each other to get it. Summer and Marissa fight for it until they notice some new cosmetics.
Julie, Kirsten, and Carter go to dinner together and Julie steps aside to the bar when she notices the same man that was looking for her in her office. Julie talks to him and his name is revealed as Lance Baldwin. Julie asks why he is there and Lance says how he was her first. He tries hitting on her and Julie stops him and makes sure Kirsten and Carter can't see. Julie asks what he wants and Lance gives her a paper bag. Julie goes back to her table where Carter and Kirsten wait for her. She says she is no longer feeling good and hurries out.
Summer and Seth are setting up the tent when Seth sees the postcard in her bag that is from Zach. Summer goes to grab something and Seth contemplates reading the postcard. He gives in and reads it until Summer finds him. Julie is watching the sex tape she made titled, "The Porn Identity" upset with herself. Alex barges into the house from the backdoor and sees the tape which Julie quickly turns off. Julie asks why she is there and Alex says she is looking for Marissa. Alex is about to leave until Julie says that she is not the only person she is lied to anymore. Julie says that she only let Marissa live with Alex because she knew Marissa would be back eventually. Alex then says how Marissa is not happy and Julie sensed it. Julie tells Alex the truth about Marissa's use of Alex. Alex denies it until Julie says how Marissa has only ever been in love with Ryan.
Marissa and Ryan meet up with their snacks. Summer and Seth are arguing about the fact that Seth went through her purse and read Zach's postcard. Summer reveals she has been talking to Zach since he is her friend and Seth wonders why Summer didn't let him see it. Marissa and Ryan interrupt them with their snacks and they all stop to eat. Caleb is helping Sandy at the same arcade game that Sandy mentioned before. They keep getting keychains and have yet to get a ring that matches Kirsten's. Sandy says he is trying to prove to Kirsten that she is the love of his life and Caleb says he doesn't need to prove it and should just tell her. Caleb sticks around to continue helping Sandy to get that ring.
Marissa and Ryan lay out their sleeping bags in the tent and things are a bit awkward between them. Ryan says they should find Seth and Summer but Marissa says that they probably want their privacy. Marissa gets a call from Alex and she says how she ended up crashing at Summer's. Marissa and Ryan argue over who should get the tent until Marissa says that it is big enough for both of them. Security arrives and finds the ball all of them were playing with during hockey.
Summer is fixing a bed for herself when Seth says he isn't mad but changes his mind when Summer says she is mad at him. Seth starts raising his voice until Summer hears footsteps. She tries shushing Seth and they notice security getting closer to them. Seth and Summer run off to tell Ryan and Marissa. In the tent, Marissa and Ryan talk about Seth and Summer getting back together. They both joke about how they will continue to hear about it and how Seth and Summer are probably fighting as they speak. Marissa brings up Thanksgiving in The Homecoming when Seth dated both Summer and Anna and they found out. Ryan says how he wish they could have been there but Marissa says they were to busy driving stolen cars in Chino. Ryan and Marissa agree that they had fun and Seth barges into the tent saying they need to leave right away.
Kirsten and Carter continue dinner, talking about Julie's magazine and if he is really up for It. Carter talks about his past projects and how he has been going through a divorce. Carter asks Kirsten if she has ever been married and she says she is. Carter points out that Kirsten isn't wearing a ring and she says she lost it. Carter thinks that is very interesting, taking off a wedding ring. Carter talks about his ex-wife and when he knew she no longer loved him, she took off her ring and put it near the sink. Carter and Kirsten share some tension and he says that they need to have another meeting where they just talk about the magazine.
Security is looking for The Core Four and find think they found them in the tent, except they set up their hockey gear and four manikins watching The Valley. The alarms start going off and Seth, Ryan, Marissa, and Summer sprint out of the mall laughing and hop into the car. Ryan drives them out of there and Marissa asks if they all want food. Seth jokes that Summer wants Italian and they start arguing. Marissa and Ryan look at each other and agree on cheeseburgers and chili fries at the diner. Julie answers a phone call from Lance and she offers him money in exchange for his silence. Lance asks for half a million dollars but Julie says she can't get that kind of money. Lance thinks she can and encourages her to explain how Julie did it to help her family get more money.
Seth and Summer are continuing to argue as they arrive at the diner. Marissa and Ryan get out of the car and leave Seth and Summer to figure things out. Seth says that now Ryan and Marissa are more functional than they are. Summer asks Seth to pinky swear with her that if she tells him what's on the postcard, they stop bickering. Seth accepts and she shows it to him. Zach said that she should say hi to Seth for him. Seth and Summer kiss and make up. Sandy waits for Kirsten and she apologizes for being home late. Sandy says he couldn't find her ring even though he looked all day with Caleb. Sandy says how he took apart the sink but pulls out an egg that encases a similar plastic ring and puts it on her finger. Sandy says he loves her and is sorry he did anything that made her doubt it.
Julie worries at home, Alex falls asleep on her couch, and as Sandy is in the shower, Kirsten goes to her dresser and takes out her wedding ring she left in a book. She puts the ring back on her finger and smiles. Marissa and Ryan eat their food in the diner together and she says how they have been apart longer than they actually were together. Ryan agrees that it has been awhile and that they are kind of like strangers now. Marisas jokingly asks who he is and Ryan says, "Whoever you want me to be" in reference to their first meeting in Premiere. They start throwing fries at each other as Summer and Seth watch from outside, arm-in-arm. Seth says how they are becoming friends again and join Marissa and Ryan inside.
