Synopsis[]
Marissa tries to mend her relationship with Ryan, but he can't forgive her for the situation with Oliver. Things become even more complicated when Ryan runs into an ex-girlfriend from Chino who is catering for Kirsten's Valentine's Day dance. Meanwhile, Seth admits his feelings to Summer and they take their relationship to a new level and Jimmy finds out he has a secret admirer.
Plot[]
It's the day before Kirsten's favorite holiday, Valentine's Day, and she cannot contain her excitement. She shoots a toy cupid arrow at Sandy but Sandy is still stuck on what occurred with Oliver, Ryan, Marissa, and the gun. Kirsten tries to make the best of it since Dr. Kim lifted Ryan's suspension and that they need to celebrate the holidays. Sandy claims that Valentine's Day is not a holiday and claims Hallmark invented it and hates it. Seth walks in in agreement with Valentine's Day hatred so Kirsten shoots the toy cupid arrow at him. Kirsten claims that Seth always goes overboard with Chrismukkah so she should get that satisfaction with Valentine's Day. Sandy and Seth argue with Kirsten over Chrismukkah and Valentine's Day as Ryan walks in. Kirsten tries to cheer everyone up with her Valentine's Day dance she is planning but she is the only one who is excited of all the Cohens.
At Harbor, Ryan is back and walks around still pretty upset about the entire situation regarding Oliver. Marissa runs into him and tries to go in for a kiss but Ryan swerves her in for a hug. Ryan and Marissa awkwardly part and talk about how they both haven't been able to sleep. Oliver is in the hospital now and hopefully he will get better as Ryan states. Marissa wants everything to go back to the way it was but Ryan doesn't say anything. Marissa talks about Valentine's Day and asks Ryan what he is doing. He brings up Kirsten's dance for the hospital which Marissa already knew about. Ryan says he is going and Marissa says she will go to. They stand in awkward silence in the hallways not sure what else to say or how to feel. They head off to class both utterly confused.
Seth finds Summer and brings up Valentine's Day and she tells him to have fun with Anna. Seth tells her that he and Anna broke up and wants to know what Summer is doing for Valentine's Day. Summer is upset that since Seth got dumped he thinks he can ask her right after the breakup what she is doing for the day. She claims she won't be his "sloppy seconds" and is going to the Valentine's Day dance. Seth says he is going to and they will both be there and argue about it.
Sandy meets with Kirsten in her office for lunch. Kirsten is finishing up organizing for the party the next day and asks Sandy if he will help set up. Sandy says he is really busy and might even be late to the dance. Sandy explains how he and Jimmy are busy with the restaurant. Kirsten says she forbids he misses out on her favorite holiday. Sandy tries to reason with her which she won't back down from. They get into an argument about either things they don't do for each other or even things they do for each other that annoys the other. The fight continues to a point where they both don't remember what they are fighting about. Kirsten tells Sandy he is on his own for lunch.
Marissa is reading at home when Jimmy gets there talking about the progress with the restaurant. Marissa gives Jimmy a gift from someone that was left at the door. There's a note from a "secret admirer" and he thinks it is from Marissa. She tells him it's not and Jimmy can't figure out who it is from. Marissa asks him if he kissed anyone recently and Jimmy doesn't answer. Marissa says she wants to avoid Valentine's Day and Jimmy asks about Ryan. Marissa says she doesn't want to talk about since Ryan won't either. Jimmy says that sometimes a romantic gesture can help when talking doesn't.
In Summer's room, she gets a knock at her door and tells them she is studying, naked, when Seth responds. He walks in and finds Princess Sparkle on her nightstand. Seth asks to explain himself to her and he says how it isn't the way she thinks in that now that Anna broke up with him, he is choosing Summer. Seth says that the reason they broke up was because it was always Summer for him. He tried to fight it and he can't do it anymore. Summer kisses him and they start making out on her bed. She asks if he has it and Seth says it is in his wallet. She takes off her clothes and Seth and Summer sleep together.
Luke visits Julie asking for something of Marissa's but Julie says how she doesn't live there anymore which he already knew. Luke then asks if she is going to the Valentine's Day dance but she plans on staying home. Luke awkwardly leaves but Julie is ... flattered? Seth and Summer lay quietly in bed together after they had sex. They both awkwardly leave each other, not sure what to do or say. Ryan is doing homework when Marissa visits him. She comes in with a rose and a plan with a romantic gesture. She begins kissing him, telling him she loves him, and starts trying to take off her clothes. They start making out, she tries taking off his clothes, and clearly wants to sleep with him but Ryan doesn't want to. He says it's too soon given everything that has happened. Marissa wishes that everything that has broken them up hadn't happened and that they could still be together. She said that she wants to make it up to him and he tells her she doesn't have to do it this way. Marissa is embarrassed and Ryan says that what is happening in the moment is wrong as she rushes out.
On Valentine's Day, Ryan is thinking about what happened the night before with Marissa when Seth barges in with news for him. Seth tells him how he had sex with Summer and doesn't give details. Ryan assumes it didn't go very well. Seth tells him it was weird and made some faces and noises he wishes he could take back. Ryan says he might get another chance but Seth doesn't agree and asks for his advice. Ryan says he isn't very good with romance nowadays since things are different now with Marissa. Seth asks if he wants to talk about it but Ryan leaves to go help Kirsten set up. Ryan's piece of advice for Seth is that he tries it again. Summer and Marissa are at the beach and Summer tells her that she wishes she waited to have sex with Seth. Marissa tells her how Ryan turned down having sex. Summer reassures Marissa saying how no one really knew about Oliver's intentions. Marissa says only Ryan did and she couldn't even listen to him. Marissa thinks she wasn't meant to be with Ryan and Summer says they might be chasing after the wrong boys.
Kirsten is finishing up decorations for the dance when Sandy walks in. Kirsten ignores him and he asks her how long she will continue to do so. Kirsten says that he ruined her favorite holiday and that they have nothing to talk about until Valentine's Day is over. Seth walks in hoping to talk to Sandy about girl stuff. Sandy says he has come to the expert and Kirsten starts giggling. The doorbell rings and Kirsten goes to answer. Seth tells Sandy they need to have "the talk." Jimmy is at the door with the same gift he got from a "secret admirer" and gives it to Kirsten. She tells Jimmy that Hailey used to make them. He asks Kirsten about her and she hasn't heard from her. Sandy and Seth are having the talk and Sandy asks if he wore protection. Seth says he did and says how awkward it was. Sandy says it is to be expected and brings up foreplay which Seth is foreign to. Sandy tells him that the Cohens are sexual beings and Seth starts to freak out. Seth thanks Sandy and Sandy guesses who it was with.
At the dance, Ryan is helping set up with Luke. Luke asks about things with Ryan and Marissa and he doesn't really answer. Luke then asks if Julie is coming to which Ryan is confused and says he doesn't know. Luke claims he is trying to get a head count. Ryan turns and nearly runs into someone and is just so happens to be Theresa Diaz. Ryan is shocked and she tells him how she is working there. Ryan says how good it is to see her. Seth visits Summer in her room and asks to talk to her. Seth asks her to do it again and gives her a kiss. Summer says it was better than the other day and she goes in for another kiss but Seth starts to massage her shoulders. He starts kissing her shoulders and Summer pushes him off, saying she's ticklish. Summer asks what he is doing and he tells her it's foreplay. She pushes him down and they just try it again.
Ryan and Theresa are talking about what has happened with Oliver and Marissa. She can tell how upset he is and he has every right to feel that way since literally no one in his life believed in him. Ryan says it feels good to talk about it since he hasn't with anyone else but her. Marissa comes looking for Ryan and sees him with Theresa. Theresa explains to Marissa why she is there and Marissa asks to talk to Ryan later and heads inside. Theresa heads inside too and nearly runs into Marissa. Ryan is getting ready when Seth walks in to talk about his second time with Summer. It did not go well again and Seth thinks it is now over with Summer. Seth is wanting to skip the dance but Ryan wants to go see Theresa. Summer tells Marissa they could skip but Marissa wants to go since Ryan's ex-girlfriend will be there and she wants to figure out what is going on with her and Ryan. Summer goes over to hug her but is limping due to an injury with Seth earlier.
Jimmy goes down to the docks looking for Hailey since Kirsten told him earlier that she sometimes goes there instead of traveling around. He finds her and she's surprised he tracked her down. He asks her to come with him to his new restaurant and she agrees. Sandy shows up to the dance and sees Kirsten but she turns away from him. He sees Ryan and Seth and tells them never to get married. Ryan and Seth are looking for Marissa and Summer when Theresa joins them with a tray of appetizers. Ryan introduces Seth to Theresa as Summer and Marissa see the interaction from another level of the building. Marissa points out Theresa and Summer says how hot she is, for Chino. Marissa starts to freak out since Ryan and Theresa's history is so extensive. Julie finds Kirsten and tells her how much she hates Valentine's Day. Kirsten notices Caleb didn't show so Julie plans on going home early to drink wine and Luke sees her leaving.
Ryan is sitting down alone at a table when Marissa finds him but he doesn't look very happy to see her. Marissa asks to start over and tries to reintroduce herself but Ryan isn't having it. Ryan says he knows what she is trying to do but he can't do it and leaves the table. Seth approaches Summer asking to talk to her. Seth apologizes saying that something isn't working and takes the blame for it. He says how maybe in a few years he could be ready for her. Jimmy and Hailey are talking about the Lighthouse and he asks about her life since she left Kirsten's. Jimmy encourages her to make a life for herself but she doesn't want to leave since Jimmy is there. Jimmy says they can't be together even though he wishes they could be. Ryan is getting air outside when Theresa joins him and asks if he wants to have a cigarette but he says he quit. She points out all of the things that have changed about him since he left Chino. Theresa asks him if he ever thinks about coming home and Ryan says he has been thinking about it lately. Theresa says she took the catering job hoping to run into Ryan since home has been so lonely since he left. Ryan asks her to leave with him and she agrees.
Sandy finds Marissa crying at the table Ryan left her at. Sandy sits down and jokes about how wonderful Valentine's Day is. He gets a laugh out of her and he talks about when things get rough for Ryan, people tend to abandon him. Marissa says that is exactly what Ryan thinks she did and Sandy encourages her to show him she hasn't. Sandy knows that Marissa isn't going to give up on Ryan even though he wants her to. Sandy says that Ryan expects her to and gives her some good advice on love and working through things when times get hard. Kirsten is listening to the entire conversation as Sandy goes on to encourage Marissa to keep fighting hard for Ryan. Summer joins them and asks Marissa if she is ready to go. Marissa thanks Sandy before she leaves and Kirsten walks up to him. Kirsten says how hard it is to hate Sandy and they both laugh about it and plan to go home. As Marissa and Summer are leaving, Ryan is too and hops in the car with Theresa and Marissa watches them drive away.
In the pool house, Theresa and Ryan are reminiscing on their childhood experiences. Theresa says how great it is that they ran into each other on Valentine's Day and hopes to run into him again. Luke shows up at Julie's door and he wanted to be with her so she wasn't alone. Luke says how great she is and that she should be appreciated. Luke says that Julie has always been the coolest mom and the one everyone wanted to be with in his friend group. Luke is about to leave but Julie stops and kisses him. Luke kisses her back and they go into the house together. Julie checks to make sure no one saw and shuts the door. Kirsten and Sandy get home and go their bedroom. Kirsten walks in to find that Sandy decorated the room with candles, roses, and chocolates.
Seth is in his room talking to Captain Oats when Summer walks in. She is trying to tell him something but hesitates. Summer then tells Seth that when they had sex for the first time, it was not only Seth's first time ever but also Summer's. Seth asks why she didn't tell him and she felt like she had a reputation and that he would think less of her. Seth disagrees and tells her he is just shocked. Seth and Summer both note the huge moment in their lives that they just blew past. Summer says it should have been special and Seth says they can slow it down and start from the beginning. Seth puts on Wonderwall by Ryan Adams and asks Summer to dance with him. Summer says how cheesy he is and they begin to slow dance together.
Marissa goes into the pool house looking to see if Theresa is there. Marissa tells Ryan that she isn't planning on loosing him and doesn't want to give up. Ryan tells her that Theresa left. Marissa hugs Ryan telling him how sorry she is and kisses his cheek. Ryan stops her and Marissa can read the room. She asks him to forgive her but Ryan asks how and says he doesn't think they should be together since someone easily came between them. Ryan asks how he knows it won't happen again and Marissa tells him it won't. Marissa asks Ryan to trust her which he fires back with how she didn't trust him. Marissa starts crying and asks if it is over and Ryan replies telling her he can't pretend it didn't happen. Marissa runs out and Ryan watches and goes to the door to shut it.

Quotes[]
- Seth: "It's not like, like now that me and Anna broke up I'm now choosing you. Because the whole reason we broke up is because of me. It's always been you Summer. It's just always been you. I tried to fight it and I tried to deny it. And I can't, I can't do it, you're undeniable."
- Sandy: "Love is crazy, it's always challenging, and it is never easy. Sometimes it is hard but you hang in there anyway. Even when you are having the worst fight in the world or even some stupid argument that none of you can even remember what it is about because it's ... it's worth it."
