Plot[]
The Cohens take in a ton of groceries into the house as they are preparing for a visit from Kirsten's father, Caleb Nichol, a visit Sandy is dreading. Kirsten is asking Sandy to make peace with him but Sandy jokes about how he is still Jewish so there is no way they will work it out. Kirsten mentions her dad is bringing a new girlfriend when Caleb walks in. He greets Kirsten and then asks for Seth. Seth and Ryan are talking about Caleb and he worries about meeting Caleb as he had recently burned down one of his model homes. Caleb greets Seth and meets Ryan, whom he calls the kid that burned down his house. Seth assures him he's fine when Caleb asks him to take something to the backyard, Ryan watches Caleb's girlfriend, Gabrielle, exit the pool.
Gabrielle is floating around their pool while Seth and Ryan watch from the hot tub. Gabrielle joins them in the hot tub and they talk about Caleb's birthday party. She asks if they are bringing any girls and Seth talks about Summer while Ryan talks about Marissa. Seth tells her how Luke and Marissa have been dating since the fifth grade and that she needs to switch it up. Luke drops by Marissa's house after getting his stitches out from the gunshot wound and asks her to hang out. He gives her a stuffed bear and asks to get back together. Marissa isn't sure but Luke convinces her to hang out with him.
Sandy and Kirsten talk about Gabrielle who is 24 and discuss the big birthday plans with Caleb. Kirsten and her dad argue about the redesign of the house. Caleb sarcastically comments that she doesn't need to consult him on an architect, as she didn't consult him on adopting Ryan. Caleb then says he will be "scaling back" Kirsten's responsibilities with the business so she can spend a bit more tiime with her new son. Next door, Julie returns from the stables, having just said goodbye to their daughter's horse, China. Julie is thinking of wanting to divorce Jimmy, after all. Ryan drops by to invite Marissa to Caleb's birthday party. Luke is there and thanks Ryan for taking him to the emergency room and calling Marissa. Ryan is disappointed and is about to invite her but instead checks to make sure she is okay and heads to work.
Ryan is working when Gabrielle visits him. They start talking about traveling and their families. Gabrielle tells him how she was a model and how it lead her to Caleb. Gabrielle and Ryan continue to talk when Marissa stops by to see Ryan. She tells him how Luke wants to get back together and she told him she needed to think about it. Marissa tells him how she doesn't know what to do and neither does Ryan. He thinks she came to have Ryan help her choose which she denies. Ryan then tells Marissa to let him know when she decides.
At the Cohens, Sandy says how hard Kirsten has been working but that it will never be enough for her dad. He tells her to quit as a way of standing up to Caleb. Kirsten says how Sandy has never supported her working for her father and he agrees since she walked herself down the aisle at her wedding. Kirsten says she can't quit. Later, Marissa tells Summer her conversation with Ryan and why he didn't even really say anything to her. Summer tells her she can't expect Ryan to choose because it is up to her not him or Luke. Ryan and Luke are riding around when they see Marissa and Summer sit down for lunch. Seth thinks it is fate between him and Summer. Summer gets up to grab salsa and Seth says hi to her. She asks him to give her a hand away from Ryan and Marissa so they can talk. Ryan says how he knows Marissa has stuff to figure out but invites her to Caleb's party. Marissa already knew about it because Luke asked her to go. Summer has Seth helping her with salsa asks Seth to invite her to her grandpa's birthday.
Sandy again advises Kirsten to quit, stating that she can open the gallery she's always wanted to and they could get the house in Berkeley they used to love. Sandy says how they moved to Newport because Kirsten's mom got sick not to stay. Sandy encourages her to think about it. At Marissa's, Summer is trying to figure out what to wear and Marissa is surprised she is going with Seth. Summer tells Marissa that there will be a lot of hot and rich banker brokers there and that Seth will be the one to introduce her to them. Marissa says it is a little mean to Seth. At family dinner, Seth is excited to have Summer as his date. Gabrielle then asks Ryan if he has someone to bring. He says he is going by himself as they both stare at each other and Seth notices. Sandy implores Kirsten to talk to her father. Caleb comes in to see what's going on and Sandy says they're thinking of moving. Caleb and Sandy argue over who has the right to speak for Kirsten and just whose house Sandy thinks he's living in. In the end, Caleb says he expects Kirsten's resignation in the morning.
During a conversation in the pool house, Gabrielle tells Ryan that she's bored with Caleb and slides her hand down Ryan's leg. They start making out when Caleb says they are leaving. The next day in the pool, Seth asks Ryan about Gabrielle. Seth is trying to figure out Gabrielle's intentions with Ryan when Kirsten asks them to help with the caterers. Seth demands answers and Ryan says they hooked up and he is shocked, saying Ryan hooked up with Seth's grandma...
On the night of the party, Caleb arrives with Gabrielle. Kirsten tries to explain the other night but gets an unsympathetic response from Caleb. Gabrielle immediately spots Ryan and resumes flirting with him. Ryan asks if she is trying to get caught and Gabrielle tells him to find her later. Julie, Marissa, Luke, and Summer arrive. Seth greets Summer and says how great she looks. Seth then hugs Marissa and says hi to Luke. Luke takes Marissa on his arm to get a drink. Ryan spots Luke and Marissa flirting at the bar. Summer is trying to impress other people at the party. Kirsten sits alone in her room and tells Sandy that they chose Newport. Kirsten then says that if Sandy has been unhappy and that if there life isn't what he wants, then they need to have a much bigger conversation.
Jimmy shows up to the party intending to ask Caleb for a job, which Julie thinks is a terrible idea. She says that the whole community sees Jimmy as a criminal and Caleb owns the community, she says he wouldn't feel any differently. Jimmy decides to try and talk to him anyway. Summer and Marissa go to the bathroom to talk. Summer points out how Marissa chose to be with Luke and how they are all over each other, wondering if they have had sex yet. Gabrielle finds Ryan in the pool house. She knows he's hurt by Marissa. After a bit of small talk, Gabrielle throws Ryan on the bed and they start making out...again. Marissa walks in, interrupting them, thinking she could talk to Ryan, she leaves apologizing and devastated. She tracks down Luke, kisses him, and drags him out of the party when Ryan goes looking for Marissa. He is too late as Luke and Marissa have already drive off.
Summer continues to talk to other guys there with Seth visibly bored. Jimmy talks to Caleb and he denies giving Jimmy a job. Julie attempts to talk Caleb into helping out her family. She tells him how she is getting divorced and that she needs to get a job. He tells her to let him know if there is anything he could do for her or the girls, to let him know. He then offers to take Julie to dinner. Summer goes looking for Seth to ask her to introduce her to more guys which Seth loudly denies. He is upset that Summer used him the whole night just so she could meet rich older guys. Summer denies it which Seth sees right through. Seth then gives her a speech of a lifetime saying that if a guy doesn't really know her, he doesn't care about who she really is. He then brings up the time she would feed a squirrel everyday in the third grade and the poem she nervously read in the sixth grade. He remembers the title of the poem and she is impressed that he remembers that about her. Summer is so flattered as Seth goes on and on about the poem that she grabs his face and kisses him.
Sandy confronts Caleb saying that Kirsten has no plans of quitting. Sandy figures out that the only reason why Caleb is trying to punish Kirsten is because she is doing so well without him. Caleb finds Kirsten and they talk about Caleb's wife and if she has heard from her sister. They manage to work things out. Gabrielle finds Ryan and says how obvious it is that Marissa likes Ryan. Ryan says he guesses she did like him. Gabrielle says how miserable Ryan looks and that is how it feels like when you are in love and leaves him alone. Marissa is with Luke at his house and things are heating up between them. Luke says how much he loves her but she ignores this and she looses her virginity to Luke. Afterwards, Luke drops Marissa off at home, where Ryan is waiting for her. She tells him that he is too late and heads inside.
