"The Father Knows Best" is the thirteenth episode in the second season of the Fox drama series The O.C.. The episode aired on the seventeenth of February, in 2005.
Synopsis[]
As Sandy continues working on Rebecca's case, Kirsten questions how strong their feelings are for one another. Meanwhile, Seth continues his downward spiral in the aftermath of Zach and Summer's Valentine's night together, while Marissa tries to confront her fear about her relationship with Alex. Also, Caleb offers Lindsay a place in his family, but not without a paternity test.
Plot[]
Ryan turns on the T.V. and finds Seth on the couch. Ryan gives Seth coffee and tells him to take a shower. Seth tries to argue about it but he can't even remember the last time he took a shower. Seth is wallowing and Ryan tells him to snap out of it. Seth has been thinking non-stop about Zach and Summer and if they had sex in the hotel room next to his. Ryan says it is pointless to think about that and Seth argues that he can ask Summer to find out. Ryan tells him not to because it is definitely awkward and creepy. Seth says he is right and it must be his lack of sleep.
Kirsten tells Sandy she has been trying to talk to Seth as they both know about his wallowing. Sandy says it sounds like lady drama and Kirsten says that there is a lot of that going around and looks at him. Sandy says he is meeting Rebecca so he can pay respect to Max. Kirsten asks to go with him since Max was very important to Sandy, he is also important to her. Sandy says that won't be a good idea since it will just be him and Rebecca at the expense that she would be caught at the funeral by the feds. Kirsten is shocked and says how weird it is that they have been spending so much time together. Sandy asks her to hang in a little longer and she doesn't exactly agree.
Sandy asks Kirsten to hang in a little longer as he spends more and more time with Rebecca.
Kirsten and Lindsay were both asked by Caleb to meet him in his office. When they get there, Caleb and Julie are arguing but Caleb lets them in. Caleb tells them he would like to formally adopt Lindsay and Kirsten and Lindsay are speechless. Caleb said he had a revelation after his heart attack knowing how fast things can change and wants Lindsay to be taken care of. Julie steps in saying that she will take care of her which everyone rolls their eyes at. Caleb says it is more than financial stability and that he wants everyone to know he is her father. Lindsay isn't sure what to say and gives her time to think about it. Kirsten is happy for her and Julie isn't as pleased.
Seth runs into Zach at school and starts to bring up his disaster meeting in San Diego. Zach tells him not to worry about it since all three of them working together wasn't the best idea. Seth agrees and then asks him if he had a good time with Summer and then very unsmoothly brings up SEX (Seth c'mon). Zach freaks out and Seth says he would never do that and stares into Zach's eyes. Zach then gets up and tells Seth to get some sleep as he is obviously sleep deprived and scaring everyone. Rebecca and Sandy spread Max's ashes into the ocean. Sandy says he has decided to take on Rebecca's case. He says that they cannot kiss again (wow Sandy) and Rebecca says she understands.
Lindsay looks for Ryan at school and tells him how Caleb wants to adopt her. Ryan is surprised and says it is a little fast. Lindsay is really excited about it and says how sweet Caleb was. Ryan then asks if Julie was there and tells Lindsay she doesn't want to have Julie Cooper as an enemy. Lindsay gets the impression that Ryan doesn't think she should go ahead with it and tells Ryan how much it means to her. Kirsten opens the door finding two FBI agents that wish to speak with her. Marissa sneaks up on Alex who tells her about a party she is throwing and says she should invite Summer. Marissa says she will and Alex can sense that Marissa hasn't told Summer about their relationship. Alex says she assumed she would have by now since they are best friends and Marissa says she will tell her.
Marissa tells Alex she will tell Summer about their relationship.
Sandy gets home late AGAIN and finds the card from an FBI agent. Sandy immediately asks Kirsten what she told them and she takes offense. Kirsten says that she did not tell them where Rebecca is staying and asks Sandy if he is worried she is holding information or telling them too much. Sandy responds saying he isn't choosing between protecting Rebecca or Kirsten. Kirsten says it most definitely is and that Sandy has already made a choice in that. Julie storms into Caleb's office wanting to talk about his decision to adopt Lindsay, saying she is trying to protect him. She suggests he redo the paternity test but Caleb says they never did one. Julie is shocked that Caleb would pay Renee without any proof but Caleb believes her word. Julie goes on to prove she might not be that honest but says he has a responsibility to the family before jumping into something like this.
Marissa is hanging out in Summer's room and asks about her trip to San Diego. Summer says it was fine and apologizes to her for leaving her alone on Valentine's Day. Marissa says she wasn't alone and Summer asks who she was with. Marissa hesitates and tells her she was with her mom. Marissa then asks her what she is doing the next night and invites her to a party being thrown by Caleb? Summer agrees to go and that she would love to keep Marissa company. Summer gets a call from Zach asking her to dinner and then tells her what Seth asked him earlier. Summer tells Marissa she has to kick Seth's ass.
Sandy talks to an old lawyer friend who has been helping Sandy with Rebecca's case. He says that even if Rebecca proves she is innocent, she will still have to serve time in prison. The lawyer confronts Sandy on his past involvement with Rebecca and says how odd it is that she all of sudden stopped running when Sandy came into the picture. The lawyer friend finally talks some sense into Sandy on how it will cause a strain on his family (which it already has). Julie confronts Renee at her home and tells her that they are going ahead with a DNA test after all. Julie is implying fraud if Lindsay isn't Caleb's daughter just as Lindsay interrupts. Julie says she was reminding Renee about Caleb's party the next night and leaves.
Sandy thinks he is doing the right thing by Rebecca and doesn't think it will affect his family.
Seth is STILL wallowing in his room while he rips up some of his sketches of Summer. Summer barges in hitting him with a pillow since he asked Zach if they had sex. She says how creepy it is and asks what is wrong with him. Summer puts him in his place saying that he has no right to know anything about her relationship with Zach. Seth says he knows and apologizes. Summer says he should be and notices he ripped up his drawings. She then tells him to shower and that her and Zach didn't have sex and leaves. Seth quietly celebrates in his room.
Kirsten visits Rebecca and straight up asks if she is in love with Sandy. Rebecca admits she is and always has been. Kirsten is surprised at how quick she was to answer and Rebecca says that nothing has happened between them. Kirsten apologizes to her about everything she has dealt with in her life and states that she has been building a life and a family with Sandy. Kirsten says that Sandy is putting all of that in danger to help Rebecca. Kirsten encourages her to consider how much she is willing to let Sandy sacrifice and leaves. Renee visits Ryan asking him to help her talk Lindsay out of the adoption. Ryan doesn't understand why and Renee says that Caleb is going to ask for a DNA test and she isn't exactly sure if Caleb is her father.
Caleb asks Sandy about DNA testing and he says that Lindsay won't take it well. Sandy gives him advice as a lawyer and encourages him to take a test since he sits on a lot of money and a huge family to take care of. Sandy then gives him advise as a lawyer and encourages him not to take it if he loves Lindsay. Marissa shows up at Alex's who started her party a little earlier. Alex introduces them to Marissa and she freaks out. Marissa says she can't stay and leaves. Alex goes after her saying she really wants Marissa to meet her friends. Alex is surprised that Marissa is ditching her to go to Caleb's party. Alex asks her if she is freaked out and Marissa says she will be back later and leaves.
Marissa freaks out when Alex tries to introduce her to her friends.
Zach meets Seth at the diner who is not wasting any time but eating several meals since he hadn't ate much. Seth apologizes to Zach for asking about his sex life with Summer which is currently non-existent. Zach then says that he started thinking more and more about sex with Summer after Seth had asked. Zach says that he is rethinking his feelings on no sex before marriage view and wants to have sex with Summer in Italy. Seth looses his appetite and leaves. Ryan waits for Lindsay and she talks about her fight with her mom. Ryan asks her if she thinks the adoption is a good idea and Lindsay gets pissed. She doesn't understand why so many people have a problem with it and Ryan encourages her to give it more time. Lindsay refuses since she has been waiting for so long. She asks what she doesn't know and Ryan doesn't answer her.
At the party, guests keep asking what the reason for the party really is but no one knows. Kirsten asks Lindsay where her mom is and she says that she isn't coming. Caleb is looking for Sandy but he isn't there yet. Sandy visits Rebecca's hotel room but she isn't there and left a note for him. Seth is playing video games and tells Ryan about his conversation with Zach. Ryan says he should stay with him and not go to the party. Seth encourages him to go because Lindsay will need him. Ryan encourages Seth to talk to Summer and find closure. Summer finds Marissa hiding in her room at the party. Summer tells Marissa about how Zach won't have sex before marriage and Marissa is shocked. She then says that Zach suddenly changed his mind and they are going to Italy the next week. Summer is hesitating on going because Seth is in her head. Summer no longer wants to have sex with Zach and feels she should tell him. Marissa finally tells Summer that she has been dating Alex. Summer is shocked and Marissa says she isn't sure (regarding her sexuality) just that she really likes her. Marissa says she doesn't expect anything for her, just that she really needed Summer to know. Marissa asks if they are still friends and Summer says of course and gives her a hug. Summer makes a joke asking if it is turning her on and they laugh.
Marissa finally tells Summer about her relationship with Alex and they have a good laugh about it.
Ryan arrives at the party just as Renee also arrives. Renee tells him that she has to tell Lindsay the truth. Ryan stops her an says he will bring her out. Ryan asks Lindsay to talk to her mom and she gets upset that Ryan and Renee are working against her. Lindsay refuses and is about to leave to hear Caleb's announcement until Ryan stops her and tells her the truth. Lindsay doesn't believe him and asks why he is ruining it for her. Sandy drags Kirsten away at the party and confronts her about Rebecca leaving, knowing Kirsten said something to her. Sandy reads Rebecca's note that explains her conversation with Kirsten. Sandy says that she has no idea what she has done and Kirsten fires back, not letting him put it on her, and that Sandy couldn't let go. Kirsten says how Rebecca is in love with Sandy and that he knew the whole time. Sandy says he isn't sure if he trusts Kirsten.
Kirsten and Sandy get into a very heated argument over Rebecca and their marriage is on thin ice.
Lindsay finds Caleb in his office and she asks him if they could announce the adoption right away. Caleb asks her to sit and explains how he wants to postpone the adoption and wants to do a DNA test. Lindsay starts crying and thinks that he talked to her mom. Lindsay pleads with Caleb but he isn't backing down from his decision. Lindsay then says she doesn't need to take a test because she knows her real dad wouldn't treat her the way Caleb is treating her. Julie offers to cover for Caleb and Lindsay drives off while Ryan goes after her. Julie announces the magazine, Newport Living (well played Ms. Julie).
Marissa finds Alex who sent her friends away. Marissa tells Alex how she freaked out and tried to tell Summer but couldn't. Alex assumes Marissa is trying to break up with her until she says how she finally told Summer. Marissa asks where Alex's friends went as she is still willing to meet them. Summer receives a visit from Seth who promises to never wallow the way he did again. Seth wishes her and Zach fun in Italy and that he is over her. Summer says she is glad he did so that she can leave knowing he is okay. Sandy gets home to Seth and Ryan watching, Hellboy, and joins them.
