"The Aftermath" is the first episode in the third season of the Fox drama series The O.C.. The episode aired on the twenty-second of September in 2005.
Synopsis[]
Although they are finally happy with each other, Marissa and Ryan are forced to stay apart by their parents. Dean Hess pressures Seth and Summer into showing their Harbor school spirit, which leads them to devise a covert plan to help Marissa and Ryan. Kirsten struggles to find the courage to return home to her family. Meanwhile, Caleb's will leaves the family in shock and Jimmy in trouble.
Plot[]
Marissa, Ryan, Summer, and Seth are eating in the diner discussing how terrible it is that Ryan and Marissa no longer go to Harbor. Marissa and Ryan say how it will fine for them but Seth and Summer disagree and talk about how Seth is going to have a hard time. Ryan asks them to lighten up the mood a little bit. Summer tells them that if they stick together, everything will be fine. Ryan and Marissa deal to hold onto that. Marissa gets a call from Julie and Ryan gets a call from Sandy, both wanting to talk about their futures. Ryan and Marissa leave when Seth asks if them sticking together will really help them but Summer is unsure.
Summer and Seth discuss the hardships with Ryan and Marissa in getting kicked out of Harbor.
Ryan gets home while Sandy is talking to the Newport Group, trying to keep things in tact while Kirsten is away. Ryan apologizes since he knows he hasn’t been making things easy for Sandy as well. Sandy tells him how worried he is of Ryan especially everything he went through in the summer. Sandy talks about the students at Harbor working hard to make a future while Ryan is kicked out for hitting the dean. Ryan says how he had his hands on Marissa to which Sandy says was wrong. Sandy tells him to stop thinking about Marissa and start thinking about himself. Sandy thinks that Ryan and Marissa need to take a break.
Marissa gets home to Julie who tells her that Kaitlin’s boarding school has agreed to accept Marissa. Marissa refuses to go and Julie encourages her to as she will get a fresh start where no one knows what she did. Marissa doesn’t care who knows but Julie thinks she should start caring so she can get her life back on track. Julie says she wasting her time running around with Ryan but Marissa disagrees and says she wanted to help get her family back together. Julie says she won’t make her go to boarding school but only if she stays away from Ryan. Marissa says it isn’t his fault but Julie thinks it’s for the best.
Jimmy promises someone over the phone that they will get their money when he shows up at the Cohen’s. Jimmy apologizes to Sandy about everything going on and Sandy appreciates the apology. Sandy can sense Jimmy wants to know when Caleb’s will is being read. Sandy asks him if everything is okay and if there’s anything he needs to know. Jimmy flusters and tells him he just wants his fiancé to be taken care of.
At Harbor, Seth is having a hard time without Ryan as he experiences a handful of wedgie incidents when the dean, Dean Hess, finds them and asks them to help the drama club. Summer says she would rather do anything that help the drama club since Taylor is the president. Taylor joins the conversation, insisting they join but Summer and Seth refuse. Taylor pouts to the dean and he threatens them in joining Ryan and Marissa.

Jimmy meets Julie for lunch at the club. Jimmy is insisting that they get married right away in the next week or so. Julie agrees and talk about their honeymoon in Kauai and then come back to reality. Julie asks Jimmy what to do since Marissa begged her not to go to boarding school and how she has called every school in their area and no one will take her. Julie says she wishes that their family could stay together enough so that Marissa could get a clean slate. Julie then asks about the education system in Kauai.
Sandy visits Kirsten at Charlotte's. Sandy is waiting for Kirsten when Charlotte walks in asking if everything is okay. Sandy gives her a very blunt answer and Charlotte leaves to give them privacy as Kirsten greets Sandy. Sandy tells Kirsten when they are reading Caleb's will and Kirsten says nothing. She finally answers saying she worked really hard to keep her dad in the past but Sandy tells her she has time to think about it. Sandy then tells her that she seemed more positive at rehab than in reality and thinks Charlotte has something to do with that. Kirsten tells him about Charlotte having moments of relapsing to which Sandy thinks she's trying to scare Kirsten. Kirsten thinks Charlotte is being honest. Sandy tells her to let him know what she wants to do about the will and kisses her goodbye when he sees Charlotte close the door.
Ryan and Marissa are making out in Marissa’s room. Marissa tells him he should leave before Julie finds him and Ryan says or before Sandy does when Julie knocks on the door. Ryan rushes to hide but stumbles off Marissa’s bed and goes to the balcony. Marissa lets Julie in and Julie tells her how she and Jimmy moved up the wedding and that they would be moving to Hawaii. Julie says it would be a fresh start for the whole family and that they can leave Newport behind. Marissa tells her she cant do it and Julie says that she can and she will. Julie tells her that after the wedding, the Coopers are moving to Hawaii and leaves. Ryan and Marissa stare at each other.
Ryan and Marissa sneak around, hoping to not get caught by either Sandy or Julie.
The next day, Seth suggests Marissa and Ryan run away together to which Ryan shoots down. Seth then says that Ryan could move to Hawaii and Ryan counters saying that Marissa could live with them instead. Seth tells him that Sandy won’t go for it because he doesn’t want Ryan seeing Marissa but suggests he tries. Summer and Marissa hug after she tells her she’s moving. Marissa tells her that Ryan is part of the reason as to why they want her to leave. Marissa says that is the best they can do to keep the Cooper family together. She says how it is the first time her parents are actually happy and that they now have a second chance, Marissa wants to be part of. Julie asks Jimmy why he has been so tense for weeks and is now relaxed all of a sudden. Jimmy says how they are moving forward and that they are getting married. Julie leaves late for an appointment with the cater when Jeff visits him, demanding his money.
Ryan visits Sandy at the Newport Group and tells him about the Coopers moving to Kauai. He then asks if Marissa could stay with them to which Sandy says he has a lot of nerve bringing that up. Ryan tells Sandy how much he cares about Marissa and that he can’t watch her get dragged away. Ryan reminds Sandy about how they are both there because someone gave them a break and tells him how Marissa needs one. Sandy hesitates but says that having Kirsten gone makes him optimistic and allows it then calls Kirsten. She tells him she’s going to go to the hearing of the will and says she might come home after. Charlotte attempts to make her rethink it and manipulates her.

At Harbor, Seth and Summer are being tortured by Taylor as they put the set together for the drama club. Taylor points out how romantic the beach hut is. Taylor tells them they did a good job and points out how nice it is they have each other due to Seth's social issues. Taylor starts making rude comments about Seth when Summer stops her and calls her a skank. Dean Hess hears her and asks all of them if there is a problem. Taylor says there isn't but walks away crying. The dean warns them that they have once chance left before they get themselves in trouble.
Taylor is left speechless when Summer stands up for Seth and calls her a skank.
Marissa visits Ryan at the pool house. They kiss and hug each other when Ryan asks how she is and Marissa says she is still having a hard time believing it is really happening. Ryan says that he talked to Sandy and that Marissa could stay with them. Marissa doesn't answer him and Ryan asks, she tells him it means the world to her but since her parents are no together, she wants to do whatever it takes to be a real family. So Marissa says no to his proposition and leaves.

Seth and Sandy talk to Ryan about long distance with Marissa. Sandy suggests they do something special together before she leaves. Sandy tells Seth he will see Kirsten later and asks him if he wants to say anything to her. Seth wants to know if she is ever going to come home but Sandy says they shouldn't push. Kirsten's leaving Charlotte's to go to the hearing as Charlotte tries to stop her but is unsuccessful.
Seth comes up with a plan to make a memorable night for Marissa and Ryan. He runs it by Summer who thinks it’s romantic but they need to be careful as there is “heavy security” and that they can’t get caught. Taylor walks in overhearing the last part. Summer and Seth decide a time and make watching hours.
At the Newport Group, Julie and Jimmy are early for the reading of Caleb’s will when Sandy walks in with Kirsten. The lawyer shows up and starts talking about Caleb’s plans for inheritance and how he wanted to split it between Kirsten and Julie. Julie and Jimmy are pleased when the lawyer tells them it was his intention and goes on to say that Caleb is unfortunately broke. No one gets anything now. The lawyer gives a letter to Kirsten from Caleb that he sent the day he died. Kirsten walks out and Julie asks where her letter is. Kirsten says how she shouldn’t have come and is upset about her last words with him and can’t imagine what his letter to her says. Kirsten gets in her ride and leaves.
Ryan goes to Marissa’s and she is surprised to see him, thinking he is mad at her. Ryan says he isn’t because he understand wanting to keep a family together. Marissa then tells him she isn’t leaving Ryan. Ryan then says what is important is that they enjoy the next 24 hours together before she leaves. He talks about taking her to the diner and she seems a little disappointed.
At the club, Julie admits forcing herself to love Caleb but never felt safe with him unlike Jimmy. Julie starts to talk about how they aren’t even broke and their move to Hawaii as Jimmy laughs, nervously. He gets a phone call but doesn’t answer it and tells Julie he has something to take care of with the boat and that he will see her at home. Jimmy says it’s bad luck for her to be with the bride the night before the wedding. He kisses her goodbye and leaves. Charlotte gets a phone call from Sandy looking for Kirsten but she isn’t there. Sandy is worried about where she went and asks Charlotte who tells him Kirsten didn’t want to go to the hearing. Charlotte lies about Kirsten saying she might relapse to Sandy.
At the diner, Summer, Seth, Marissa, and Ryan finish up dinner. Seth and Summer start to talk about being tired even though it isn’t late yet and say they should leave. Marissa is all confused and thinks Ryan, Summer, and Seth are up to something. They laugh it off and Summer and Seth leave. Ryan then tells her he has a surprise for her. Jimmy has a suitcase in hand and seems to be making a run for it when Don gets stops him. Don asks if he has his money and Jimmy doesn't and ran into complications. Two other guys come into the picture and take Jimmy into their car. They take him underneath the pier and start beating Jimmy up. Kirsten buys a bottle of liquor at some gas station and goes to a motel.
Ryan tells Marissa he has a surprise for her on the last night before she leaves for Hawaii with her family.
At the beach, Ryan guides Marissa with her eyes closed to the surprise. He reveals a beach hut to her and asks if she likes it, which she does. Ryan and Marissa are making out in the hut when Marissa tells him to stop and that she can't do this and runs out. Ryan looks confused when Marissa pops her head in and asks why he wasn't even going to try and stop her. Ryan grabs her as she laughs and says she is pretty funny. Ryan asks her if she is sure she wants to have sex as they have done a lot but have never done that before. Marissa shakes her head yes and Ryan tells her it will make it so much harder for her to leave now. Marissa starts to undress herself.
Ryan asks Marissa for consent but they know how much harder it will be for her to leave.
Ryan and Marissa sleep together for the first time. Sandy calls Kirsten but she doesn't answer. Kirsten is staring at the bottle of liquor.

The next morning, Ryan and Marissa are cuddling when Marissa's phone rings and wakes them up. Marissa asks the person on the phone what is wrong. Marissa and Ryan run to Jimmy's boat. Marissa sees her dad beaten and bruised badly and asks what happened. Jimmy says he is in trouble and he tried to fix it but has to go away again. Marissa tells him that if he has to go he should but if he leaves, she doesn't want him to come back as it is too hard for her to keep saying goodbye to him. Marissa hugs him and she asks if there is anything she could do. Jimmy asks Marissa to give a wedding band to Julie. Jimmy tells Marissa how much he loves Julie. Ryan and Marissa leave to go find Julie.

Charlotte gets a knock on the door from a realtor and she tells Charlotte the family looking to have the house she is staying in are coming to live in it the next day. She is confused and thought she had it for a few more weeks. Charlotte didn't clear the background check so that isn't the case for her anymore and needs to pay the two weeks of rent. Charlotte begins to pack up her stuff and bails out the window. Sandy is greeted by Kirsten who tells him she is home now. Sandy is relieved she is okay and they hug and kiss. Kirsten apologizes for scaring him and tells him where she was and what she bought but that she didn't drink it. Kirsten is ready to get back to her life and pulls out the letter from Caleb and asks Sandy to read it with her. Kirsten reads it and the letter is an apology from her dad.
Marissa goes to the club to find her mom. Marissa walks over to her slowly when Julie looks at the door and sees Ryan. Julie asks Marissa what is wrong and where her dad is. Marissa doesn't say anything but gives her mom the wedding band. Julie says no and starts crying. Marissa hugs her mom as she starts to worry about what they will do. Marissa says they will be okay and that they will figure it out together.
Julie realizes that Jimmy is not coming to their wedding and Marissa gives her the wedding band.
Seth and Summer are returning the hut to the theater and are proud of themselves for helping give Ryan and Marissa a good night. Summer leaves Seth to get the tiki torches from the car when the dean catches him. He says that he never thought Seth was a thief to which Seth says he borrowed it. Seth starts to tell the dean how much his dad likes musicals and jokes to him to open up auditions to parents. The dean calls Seth a thief and a liar. Seth says he will build it back up and restore it as it is not that big of a deal. The dean gives Seth a month of detention unless he wants to give up his partner as Summer opens the door behind them. Seth covers for her and earns another month of detention.
Back at the beach, Ryan and Marissa are walking together and he apologizes about her dad. She says she isn't mad at her dad but is now scared more than ever. Ryan says that if they stick together things will be okay and kiss.
Ryan and Marissa agree to stick together despite everything changing in their lives.
Seth and Ryan are talking about how he got detention. Seth is proud he didn't sell out Summer and Ryan says he is becoming a man. Sandy walks through the door with a bag of groceries followed by Kirsten. Ryan and Seth rush over to hug her and Seth asks if she is really home. Kirsten says she is and that she isn't going anywhere again. Seth tells Kirsten how much he missed her and Sandy asks them if they are hungry. The Cohens bring the groceries into the kitchen and start to catch up.
Kirsten returns home with her family and she tells them she is back for good.
