Meanwhile, after Julie admits her naked mistake to Kirsten, they both agree to get Caleb in on it for more help, unaware that Caleb as always, has a hidden agenda. The Newport Living magazine is officially launched, but Julie's blackmailer, Lance, makes an appearance after Caleb had stiffed him for his blackmail money.
Plot[]
Sandy is trying to get dinner started as Kirsten is just getting off the phone with Carter. Ryan and Seth grab dinner and try to go to the pool house before Sandy stops them, saying it's a family dinner. Kirsten says she needs to work and Seth and Ryan say they are in the middle of a game. Sandy says he doesn't care and that they are eating as a family, no excuses. The phone rings and Kirsten thinks it's work, Seth hopes it's Summer, and Ryan is waiting for a call from Marissa. Sandy answers it and it's for Ryan. He answers it thinking it is Marissa when in fact it is his brother, Trey Atwood, calling to let him know he is getting out of jail and wants Ryan to pick him up.
The next day, Ryan is thinking long and hard and bracing himself before he has to go pick up Trey. Seth asks if he has talked to him since Thanksgiving in The Homecoming. Ryan says he hasn't because he thought Trey would be out of his life for good. Seth asks if he wants him out of his life to which Ryan says he isn't sure. Seth doesn't have much advice for him since this is a pretty tricky situation but tells Ryan that he has his back as his other brother. Kirsten is worried that Sandy will want to adopt Trey and he assures her that Trey is much older and won't want that. Sandy still thinks they should help in some way but Kirsten isn't sure how it will affect Ryan, stating how well he has been doing. Seth and Ryan walk in and Sandy asks Ryan if he is ready to go. Ryan thanks Sandy for driving but says he can handle it on his own. Sandy says it is a Cohen problem and head out with bagels. Seth says he should go with them because he has had behavioral issues and thinks prison will straighten him out. Everyone laughs.
At Harbor, Summer tells Marissa about Ryan going to pick up Trey from jail which she heard from Seth. Marissa says she wish she knew so that she could be there for him. Summer says that she sounds like a girlfriend but Marissa argues she is trying to be his friend. Summer and Marissa spot Zach coming into school but Summer is afraid to talk to him since she broke up with him before he left for Italy in The Rainy Day Women. Marissa and Summer welcome Zach back and he says how it was the best vacation ever. Zach asks them to catch up at lunch and has pictures to show them. Marissa says that Summer doesn't need to worry and that Zach seems okay. Summer is suspicious and thinks he is hiding something.
Ryan and Sandy wait in jail for Trey to be released. Sandy says how it feels like forever ago when he got Ryan out of juvie in Premiere. Sandy suggests Trey stays with the Cohens for a little bit but Ryan isn't so sure. Ryan spots Trey and as he is leaving jail, Ryan offers to shake his hand but Trey pulls him in for a hug. Sandy introduces himself to Trey and they head out together. Kirsten and Carter are watching a video in Julie's office when she walks in confused asking what they are watching. Kirsten and Carter are making a video for an introduction for the magazine. Julie snaps out of it and asks to talk to Kirsten in private. She finally tells Kirsten about the sex tape, Sandy's help, and the money Lance is requesting. Kirsten suggests Julie tells Caleb.
Sandy and Ryan drop off Trey at a friend of his but they don't answer the door. Feeling guilty, Ryan offers Trey a chance to stay with the Cohens for a few days. Seth runs into Zach and he apologizes about Summer. Zach says that Seth and Summer belong together and he is okay with it. Zach makes Seth promise not to tell Summer that he has a new girlfriend. Sandy, Ryan, and Trey get back to the Cohens and Trey is surprised by how wonderful the house is. Ryan takes Trey to the pool house and he can't believe where Ryan has been staying. Ryan reminds him it is only for a few days and Trey says he doesn't want to screw things up anyway. Ryan leaves but glances back at Trey in the pool house, worried.
Seth walks into the pool house thinking he is talking about Trey with Ryan until Trey comes out of the bathroom. Seth meets Trey and it's awkward. Sandy and Ryan enter and Sandy gives Trey money to get some new clothes and that Ryan will take him. Seth asks Ryan if he wants him to come but Ryan asks Seth to call Marissa instead. Julie makes Caleb a nice lunch and she tip toes around her conversation she needs to have with him. Julie finally tells Caleb the whole story and leaves him speechless. Caleb offers to pay the money and gets it situated right away. Julie thanks Caleb and she leaves to work on her magazine.
Summer wonders why Zach is acting so normal and Seth is a little uneasy as to how concerned she is about it. Summer asks if Zach said anything and Seth tells her about his new girlfriend. Summer is surprised that he moved on so fast. Trey and Ryan are looking at watches and also attempting to look for clothes. Marissa joins them and reintroduces herself to Trey. Trey remembers she is Ryan's girlfriend to which Marissa and Ryan say they are just friends now. Marissa offers her help and gives Trey some options for him to try on. Ryan thanks Marissa for coming and she puts a hat on him she thinks looks "adorable" on him and they joke around with each other.
Julie is relieved that Caleb is helping her and notices that Kirsten is distracted. She meets her line of sight and notices Kirsten checking out Carter. Julie thinks that Kirsten has a crush on him but she denies it just as Sandy comes in. Sandy tells her how he invited Trey to stay for a few days which Kirsten is completely fine with. Sandy is shocked as she thought she wouldn't approve. Kirsten says she trusts him since he was right about Ryan. Sandy asks to meet Carter and Kirsten suggests another time since he is busy with the magazine launch. Ryan, Marissa, and Trey are checking out and just as they are leaving, a worker asks to check Trey's bag. Trey says he didn't do anything wrong and Ryan tries to step in. The worker sends for security which causes Trey to dump everything out of his bag, saying he paid for all of it and starts knocking things over...
Back at the Cohen's, Ryan tells Seth about what happened and that if Trey hadn't left when he did, there would have been a fight. Ryan tells him that Trey has a "short fuse" and Seth asks if he told Kirsten and Sandy. Ryan says he can't just as Kirsten comes in saying that Trey seems to be adjusting well. Sandy is going through some job openings in the paper with Trey and he asks Ryan to go with him which Ryan immediately says no to. Kirsten, Sandy, and Seth leave the kitchen so Ryan and Trey can talk. Trey apologizes to Ryan about the incident at the mall and Ryan points out that he still trashed a store. Trey acknowledges that his old ways will not work in Newport and that he needs to change. Ryan asks him to do it soon.
Zach visits Summer and gives her her stuff she left at his place. He says he doesn't think it is a good idea for him to be holding on to things of her's since it reminds him too much of their relationship. Zach realizes that Seth told her about his new girlfriend and reminds Summer that she left him. Summer kicks him out and offers to drop off his stuff later. Caleb shows up to Lance's to give him the money and Lance assures him it's the only copy and gives him the tape. Caleb then brings in some guys he hired to watch Lance and takes both the money and Julie's tape, then leaves. Julie comes into Kirsten's office, hoping she will help her pick a dress to wear for the launching of Newport Living just as Carter drops in to gift Kirsten a bottle of wine. Julie makes eyes at Kirsten and she denies his request to have a drink before the launch. Carter is confused since they usually have a bottle of wine each night together and Kirsten says they can celebrate at the party. Carter leaves and Julie teases her.
Summer stops by the Stevens' to drop off Zach's stuff when his mom, Elaine, answers the door. She is surprised to see Summer and tells her that Zach isn't home. Summer apologizes to Elaine and she doesn't take it lightly. Summer says that something good came out of it for Zach since he has a new girlfriend which Elaine tells her that Zach never left the hotel room. Ryan goes to the pool house and asks Trey how the job hunting went. Trey says it didn't go well and that because of his time in jail, he isn't getting hired. Ryan asks him to get dinner and as they are leaving, Ryan finds the watch from the store hidden. Trey says he went back to the store to buy the watch and Ryan tells him not to lie. Trey says he isn't and Ryan looses his cool with him. They start arguing and Trey threatens to leave and tells Ryan he bought the watch as a gift for Ryan, then throws the receipt at him.
Sandy finds Ryan and asks where Trey is and he figures out that he left. Ryan says that it is harder than he thought it would be and asks to borrow the car. Zach visits Summer and says how he knows she talked to his mom. He explains that he knew he had to face her and Seth but didn't want things to be tense so he made up a fake girlfriend. Zach told Seth because he knew he would tell Summer right away. Zach is then relieved to no longer be apart of Summer and Seth's drama. As Ryan is heading out of the launch party, he passes by Marissa who asks where he is going. Ryan tells her he is going back to Chino to get Trey and Marissa offers to go with him. Ryan starts to talk about the last time they went and Marissa fires back saying she saved him and they both leave together.
Kirsten and Julie are talking about the fact that Julie's face will be on a magazine to which Julie expresses how surprised she is. Caleb joins them saying how proud he is of Julie and that the magazine will be successful. Caleb then tells her that everything is taken care of. Summer finds Seth and she is mad that he can't figure out why she is upset and threatens him to figure it out before she leaves. Carter asks Kirsten if she is mad at him and that she should tell him since they will be working together for a long time. Carter notices Julie's acknowledgement of them and quickly backpedals out of the conversation, leaving Kirsten embarrassed, she asks a worker for a glass of chardonnay and the worker just so happens to be Lance.
In Chino, Marissa and Ryan arrive at a bar that Ryan remembers is one Trey visits often. As they are walking in, Ryan notices many creepy guys looking at Marissa. They spot him inside playing pool and Marissa sits down to give Ryan time to talk with Trey. Ryan tries talking to Trey but he doesn't want to talk. Trey then says that it wasn't going to work but Ryan says he isn't going back to Newport without him. Trey tells him to stay there and he leaves the bar.
Seth goes to Summer and tells her that he thought about it but doesn't know what he did wrong. Seth says he is willing to apologize to which Summer then asks why he told her about Zach's new girlfriend. Seth says it was because Summer begged him to but she knows there is another reason. Seth says he was jealous because she was going on and on about Zach and that he was worried that she no longer wanted to be with him. Summer says that somehow she is drawn to Seth every single time despite his flaws.
Carter starts the launch speech and introduces Julie to everyone. Julie then encourages everyone to watch the video about Newport Living. She plays it but instead of the Newport Living promotional video playing, Julie's sex tape plays. Kirsten and Carter try to stop it as Julie stands in shock. Everyone is confused and shocked as well as Kirsten and Carter get the video to stop. Julie is humiliated and then notices Lance in the audience. Kirsten gets Julie off stage while Carter encourages everyone to get a drink. Julie sulks in Kirsten and Sandy's bedroom when Caleb comes in to comfort her. Julie says she doesn't understand since Caleb paid him (he took the money away from Lance!). Caleb then says how you can meet people's demands but it is never enough. Julie doesn't want to show her face again and Caleb offers them to get away as something else will be the talk of the town when they get back. Sandy meets Carter and they really hit it off. Carter tells Kirsten that there has been a vibe between them and takes the blame for it.
In Chino, Ryan and Marissa continue to wait for Trey and she says he doesn't seem to be coming back. Ryan and Marissa get up to leave and as they do, a creepy guy that had been watching Marissa, approaches her and asks her to get a drink. Ryan declines for her as Marissa is uncomfortable and the guy makes comments at Ryan. Marissa grabs Ryan's hand to get them out of there and the guy yells at Marissa. Ryan fires back at him and tells the guy to leave Marissa alone. The guy then grabs Marissa and Ryan tries to stop him but gets punched in the process. Ryan punches him back and other guys join in. Outside of the bar, Trey hears Ryan and Marissa and joins in. Trey tells them to let go of his brother and eventually they do and Ryan, Marissa, and Trey head for the door and run out of there to the car.
When Ryan, Marissa, and Trey get to the car, Ryan offers Trey a chance to come back to Newport and stay with the Cohen's. They get back and join Sandy and Kirsten including Seth and Summer. Everyone gathers around to eat leftovers from the party and Sandy gets the family dinner he wanted.
