Tensions heat up between Sandy and Kirsten when Sandy decides to help Max Bloom, his mentor from law school, find his daughter, Rebecca, who was Sandy's first love. Seth and Zach work on a comic book based on their lives in Newport, while Summer questions why she's been left out. Ryan makes an attempt to unite Lindsay and Caleb after Lindsay tells Ryan she is curious in getting to know her "new" father. While Julie is in Paris, Marissa looks for new ways to rebel, and in doing so, her friendship with Alex grows, leading to an excursion to Los Angeles.
Plot[]
Ryan, Seth, and Zach are walking on the pier discussing if Seth should ask about his relationship status with Alex as he is confused. Zach thinks he should but Ryan doesn't think so. Seth says it has already been a week and he is dying to know if she is back together with Jodie. They all walk into the dinner and talk about how Ryan also had his doubts in his own relationship with Lindsay. Seth brings up how Ryan went to Lindsay in The SnO.C. and asked her to give him a shot. Zach says it is exactly what Seth should do with Alex. Seth asks him if that's how it works with Summer and Zach questions is as well. Summer joins them and then Lindsay does soon after. Seth gets up and leaves, feeling left out.
Sandy is browsing for offices in the paper and isn't getting any luck but is interested in guest houses. Kirsten actually finds him an office but Sandy would rather use a guest house as they are cheaper. Sandy leaves to meet his realtor and Kirsten goes with him. Marissa is jamming out to music in her room and pours herself a glass of more alcohol when Caleb walks in. She is in her nightgown and asks why he is in there. Caleb apologizes and questions why she isn't at school. Caleb says that since Julie's been gone it's been hard without her and Marissa fires back saying he should have gone with her. He asks if she needs a ride to school but Marissa lies saying she isn't feeling good. Caleb offers to call his physician to check on her but she politely declines.
Marissa picks up the phone and calls Alex, asking what they will do that day. Alex is confused since she thought she would be in school and assumed Marissa was sick of her since they have been hanging out everyday for the past week. Marissa says she isn't and asks Alex if she is sick of her. Alex immediately says no and tells her that her ex is still there. Marissa was under the impression that Jodie was leaving but Alex and her apparently made up. She gets a knock at the door thinking it's Marissa but it is actually Seth. She hangs up with Marissa and Seth asks about Jodie. He asks where he stands with her when Jodie comes to the door in a towel. Alex leaves them to it and Jodie slams the door in Seth's face.
Lindsay and Ryan talk about Seth skipping first period and if Sandy and Kirsten would be okay with it. The conversation leads to Lindsay asking about her dad, Caleb. Ryan says that Caleb isn't nice to him but other than that he is great, very comforting. Lindsay questions if Caleb will ever call her and Ryan tries to be supportive. They both head their separate ways to class. Sandy's realtor shows him and Kirsten a fixer upper type guest house that could pose as his office. Sandy says he likes it and Kirsten tries to talk him out of it. Kirsten says it is a surf shop which is exactly why he likes it. Sandy picks up a call from Max Bloom, his professor from law school. He tells his realtor he will take it and continues his conversation outside.
At Harbor, Summer and Zach are getting coffee and see Seth. Summer asks what's wrong with him and Zach assumes things didn't go well with Alex. Zach goes to find out and Seth tells him what happened. Zach apologizes and says that Seth can get back to his life now. Seth says he currently doesn't have one as he draws comics. Zach looks at them and says it is exactly what he should be doing, giving him an idea of making his own comic. Summer brings them both coffee and Zach tells her that he is making his own comic and offers to help him with it.
Marissa asks Alex about her relationship with Seth and Jodie. She tells her that her and Seth are friends and her and Jodie are over. Alex goes looking through her jewelry box looking for a necklace that she figures out Jodie took from her when she left earlier. She says how much she loved the necklace even though it was a matching one with Jodie and Marissa suggests they go get it the next day. Ryan walks into Caleb's office asking to talk about Lindsay. Ryan tells him how she has been asking about him. Caleb shoots him down saying he would have a relationship with her if he really wanted it and sarcastically asks about Ryan's own dad. Ryan says that he should be getting to know Lindsay and that Caleb would be in jail if it weren't for Sandy.
As Sandy is moving boxes into his new office, Max greets him. They catch up on each other's lives and Max asks to help him find Rebecca. Sandy asks why he wants to do it now after all the time that has passed. Max tells him he is nearing the end of his life and so seeing his daughter is one of his last wishes. Max tells him how they haven't spoken since the accident and assumes Sandy would have been in contact since Sandy was the love of Rebecca's life. Sandy says that it happened a long time ago when they were kids. Max begs for his help and Sandy is more than willing. Sandy says that his wife will understand.
The next day, Sandy tells Kirsten he has to go to a prison for the day to interview a client about a missing person that he knew back in Berkley for his old law school professor. Sandy tells Kirsten that he is helping Max look for Rebecca. Kirsten knows that they were deeply in love and were previously engaged until she burned down a lab site. Sandy tells her that Max is dying and he asked him to find her and that if he does, he is going to ask her to turn herself in and let the case go to trial.
Caleb knocks on Marissa's door and enters to her blasting music again and assumes she is feeling better. He turns off the music saying he was trying to check on her the day before but she didn't answer. Marissa says she was sleeping and leaves at the sound of a car horn. Caleb demands her to talk with him but Marissa says that he isn't her father and he should parent Lindsay instead. Ryan finds Zach and Seth and asks what the comic book is about. Zach and Seth are struggling to figure that part out still and Zach has an idea that it could be about Newport and Seth says it could be about their lives in Orange County with powers. Summer interrupts and is upset that Seth is taking Zach from her and he offers to hang out later. Summer gives them an idea and they work through it which makes Summer storm off.
Kirsten gives Caleb contracts to sign but he is lost in thought. Caleb tells Kirsten he hasn't been a good father in general and she encourages him to call Lindsay. Lindsay continues to talk about Caleb to Ryan until she gets a call from him. Caleb asks to have dinner with her and she tells Ryan. Lindsay asks him to come with her but Ryan doesn't think it is a good idea. Lindsay isn't going without him. Alex and Marissa are driving to L.A. and Marissa asks about Alex's tattoo. Alex says that she got it when she was drunk and got emancipated from her parents which makes Marissa laugh. Marissa asks how she got emancipated and Alex tells her that her parents did so after they found out about her and Jodie. Marissa wishes she could do that and Alex says if she pisses her parents off bad enough they will. Marissa asks her if she misses her parents and Alex says she does sometimes but is glad she did it.
Sandy visits Joe Zukowski who is surprised to see him. Joe asks about Sandy's career and asks him to get him out but Sandy says it was Joe who set the lab on fire which killed a custodian. Sandy asks about Rebecca and they appear to have some history with fighting over Rebecca. Sandy says that isn't the case anymore and tells him it is about Max. Joe says that they will never find Rebecca since she is dead. Sandy tells Kirsten this later and Sandy doesn't believe it. Sandy makes calls to old lawyer friends to try and figure out what happened. Kirsten drinks more as Sandy walks out.
Alex and Marissa arrive at Jodie's and Alex asks Marissa not to say anything but she clearly needs Marissa's help. Jodie answers the door and Marissa speaks for Alex saying they came to get Alex's stuff but they aren't staying. Jodie lets them in. Seth is drawing more comics when Ryan walks in. Ryan tells Seth he has to be there for Lindsay during their dinner and Seth makes the argument that their grandpa hates Ryan. Seth shows Ryan some of his comic drawings and finds that most of them are drawings of Summer that he did in Portland. Ryan tells him not to show Zach and Seth agrees.
Marissa waits for Alex to get all of her things who is struggling to find all of them. As Alex and Jodie argue, Marissa goes looking for the necklace and finds it hidden in Jodie's jewelry box. Jodie tries to get Alex to stay and Marissa doesn't let that happen, saying she won't let her girlfriend stay. Alex and Marissa walk out arm in arm and she thanks Marissa. Alex is glad she got most of her stuff and Marissa shows her the necklace she snuck away to steal. Marissa gives her both of the matching necklaces which Alex decides to give one to Marissa. She puts the necklace on Marissa and they share more intense eye contact. Marissa has one more stop she wants to make before they head back to Newport.
Zach is looking through the comics that Seth has drawn who thinks they are amazing. Summer comes to the door to find Zach with Seth and yells at him for bailing on her again. Before they leave, Summer finds his drawings and sees that there are drawings of Marissa, Ryan, Captain Oats, himself, and Zach and asks where she is in them. Zach says they made good progress and that she left her purse upstairs. Marissa drops Captain Oats and finds a drawing book under Seth's bed. She opens it to find the drawings Seth made of her and puts it in her bag.
Lindsay and Caleb are having dinner and she thanks him for calling her. As Caleb asks about her life, Ryan shows up and apologizes for being late. Caleb didn't know Ryan was coming but says he should have assumed he would make himself part of it. Lindsay says that she asked him to be there and Ryan offers to leave. Caleb brings up how he already invaded in Kirsten's life and is trying to do the same with his other daughter. Caleb brings up the fact that Ryan went to him saying that Lindsay wanted a relationship with Caleb which Lindsay didn't know about. Caleb assumes that they are wanting money from him and leaves.
Sandy stays up late to continue leaving messages for his lawyer friends. Kirsten finds him and asks what it will take for him to let Rebecca go. Kirsten talks about how he was supposed to be with Rebecca before he ended up with her and claims he is still in love with Rebecca. Sandy says that it isn't true and Kirsten asks him to come to bed as the phone rings. Sandy answers it and his friend. Sandy tells Kirsten she really is dead and heads to their bedroom. Kirsten asks him what he will do and Sandy says he needs to tell Max in person. Kirsten apologizes and says she needs to try and let go of her as well. Sandy heads to his office.
Summer gets home and opens up Seth's drawing book in her room alone. She looks through the pages with Princess Sparkle by her side. She is amazed by Seth's drawings of her. Lindsay drops off Ryan at home and she apologizes to him for making him come to dinner. Lindsay notices how much Caleb hates Ryan and she tells him she didn't want anything from Caleb and only wanted to ask him questions. Ryan offers to talk to him again or ask Kirsten to but Lindsay says he has done more than enough. He kisses her goodnight and she leaves.
Marissa brings Alex into her room and takes off her shirt to see if she is bleeding from her tattoo as Caleb walks in. Marissa asks him to leave and threatens Caleb to stop her from leaving with Alex. Summer visits Seth and returns the drawing book she stole earlier. Seth is embarrassed and tries to explain himself, saying he will destroy them and feels really bad. Summer think they are good and gives him her notes on the drawings. Seth shows her more and Summer likes them. Seth apologizes but Summer asks to have them. Seth asks her not to share them with Zach and they are both in agreement of that.
Sandy is having a drink at the club and calls Max, asking to meet with him later that night to which he agrees. Ryan is playing video games when Seth joins him asking how dinner went. Ryan tells him what happened and says he feels like he is making everything worse by helping. Seth tells Ryan how Summer stole his drawing book and actually liked the sketches he drew of her. Sandy is in his office when Max walks in. Sandy apologizes for calling so late but Max says it's okay and actually has something, or someone, to show him. Rebecca Bloom walks in the door and says hi to a speechless Sandy.
