Kevin Volchok

Template:CharacterEKevin Volchok was a recurring and antagonistic character in "The O.C.". He was portrayed by Cam Gigandet.

The story of the Character 

Before Season 3

Kevin was introduced in the third season. He was Johnny Harper's rival and got punched by Ryan Atwood early in the season. After Johnny's death he showed he had feelings, he got into a relationship with Marissa Cooper. They broke up because he cheated on her. He later killed her (accidentally) because he did not accept the fact, that according to him, Marissa had chosen Ryan in his place.

Season 3

Volchok was Johnny Harper's top rival for a surfing sponsorship though they used to be close friends. Later on, Johnny caught his girlfriend, Casey, cheating on him with Volchok who justified it with, “You got my sponsorship, I got your girl.” Later on, Johnny decided to confront Volchok at the beach, but before a fight ensued, Ryan Atwood intervened by punching Volchok square in the face.

Volchok quickly and persistently tries to pursue a rematch with Ryan including confronting him at the diner, keying “Lil’ Bitch” into the Cohens' Range Rover in the parking lot at The Harbor School, taking money from Marissa Cooper and finally kidnapping her for ransom with a payoff of a fight with Ryan. Of course Ryan ends up at the pier seemingly ready to fight him, but decides to break a glass tuna and tell Volchok that he better be prepared to die or kill him.

We don’t see much of him again till after Johnny’s death. He took Johnny’s death hard and acted differently after his death. Marissa empathized with this change and the need for closure and began a strange friendship with him, which escalates after she breaks up with Ryan.

In the meantime, while Ryan pursues a relationship with Sadie Campbell, Johnny’s cousin, it becomes apparent that Volchok previously had a relationship with Sadie that only deepens their rivalry. Eventually Marissa and him develop a casual romantic relationship first fueled by Marissa’s growing distance from her friends and mother; and Volchok's want to anger Ryan.

The relationship careens into something serious, even catching a moment of sensitivity from him when he fell asleep watching Sound of Music to get know her better.

Marissa breaks off the relationship when she catches Volchok cheating on her at the prom. He also stole the post-prom party money from Taylor Townsend to the tune of $5,000 dollars, which Ryan must retrieve in his old "Kid Chino" ways. Beating him nearly to death, Ryan takes him to a nearby hospital where Volchok says he was jumped and didn’t know who did it. He decides to blackmail Ryan initially to participate in a robbery, then to help him escape Newport, and finally to get Marissa to talk to him again when he realizes that she was the best thing to ever happen to him.

Marissa doesn’t bite and blackmailing Ryan didn’t help encourage her to talk to him let alone get back together with him. Upon her last refusal to speak with him, Volchok decides to follow them around. He ends up getting pretty drunk and as Ryan drives her to the airport, Volchok tried to convince them to pull over by ramming his car into theirs. Eventually, he pushed them over the road and their car rolled in a ditch. Marissa then died of her injuries in the arms of Ryan.

Season 4

After leaving Marissa and Ryan, on the way, letting the girl die, he decides to run away, Heather, who was in the car with him, advises him to go back and surrender to the police, confessing his crime. The boy, however, decides to escape, taking refuge in Mexico. However, Seth Cohen manages to find him and tells him to turn himself in to the police instead of running away from the vengeful Ryan. To perpetuate the ruse, Seth sent Ryan to the wrong address, then told Sandy and Kirsten where Ryan was going, saving Ryan from doing something which could get him in deep trouble. Seth manages to convince Volchok to stop running, and thus returns to Newport Beach and goes straight to the police.  

Kevin decides to contact Sandy to be his public defender and brings him to a hotel to wait his charges in Marissa's death. As he waits to be taken to jail, Ryan confronts him about Marissa's death. After Ryan punches him twice and holds a broken bottle over his prostrate body, Volchok tells Ryan he doesn't care what happens to him. He just wants it all to be over. He tells Ryan it was an accident, and that he adored and loved Marissa and he was going after Ryan. He then tells Ryan he was jealous. He didn't accept that once again Marissa possibly chose to be with Ryan. After they are done talking, Volchok walks outside where police are waiting with Sandy and assistant district attorney Greg Hoades.  

They handcuff him and put him into a cop car, to be taken to jail for Marissa's death. Under California law, Volchok was eligible to be charged with second-degree murder in Marissa's death and attempted murder against Ryan due to (a) being intoxicated at the time of the crash and (b) targeting the occupants of the other vehicle with threats prior to the accident. If the maximum charges were filed, Volchok is probably still incarcerated in a California State Prison, possibly San Quentin.

Trivia

The character was named this way, "in honor" of actor Adam Brody's agent.
