The O.C. Wiki

Frank Atwood was a main character in the fourth season after being only mentioned in the first and second seasons of the Fox drama series The O.C.. He was portrayed by Kevin Sorbo.

Frank is the father of Trey Atwood and a child with an unknown name, he is also, the biological father of the main character of the show : Ryan Atwood-Cohen. He had a marriage with Dawn Atwood, although she has a relationship with others men, it is not confirmed or mentioned, the fact that the two are in fact divorced.

Early Life[]

Before the pilot, Frank was accused of armed robbery, spending a lot of time in prison. Along with that, it’s been mentioned how he was in the father role of the Atwood family. The male used to beat his wife and his two sons, often getting drunk.

Throughout the Series[]

Season 4[]

Frank appears in the flesh in the episode: The Earth Girls Are Easy. In this episode, we discover that he is now a redeemed man. After learning about his son and serving his sentence in prison, Frank decides to search for him. He follows his friend Gordon Bullit to Orange County, where he meets Julie Cooper. The two begin to talk after he reveals his reason for coming to Orange County. With Julie's help, Frank contacts Sandy Cohen, Ryan's adoptive father. After a serious discussion, he asks Sandy for a chance to meet Ryan.

Initially, Ryan is shocked by the news and unwilling to forgive Frank for abandoning his family when he and his brother were children, leading him to refuse to see Frank. Despite being hurt, Frank accepts this decision. However, influenced by Kirsten, Sandy decides to convince Ryan to give Frank at least one chance. Ryan eventually agrees to meet, but he has not forgiven Frank and, at least for the moment, has no intention of doing so.

The two, however, slowly start to approach each other. Ryan makes it clear that the only man he truly considers his father is Sandy, as he was the one who saved and adopted him. It is thanks to Sandy and Kirsten that Ryan has become the man he is today.

By the end of the series, Ryan and Frank reconcile with the help of Taylor Townsend, Ryan's girlfriend. Taylor and Ryan orchestrate a Valentine's date for Frank and Julie at a hot dog stand, cleverly diverting Julie from the date Kaitlin had planned for her with Bullitt.

The last appearance of Frank's character occurs in the season finale: The End's Not Near, It's Here. In this episode, we see him attending the graduation ceremony of his former girlfriend, Julie Cooper. During the event, he is seen holding their son, while he, along with Julie's daughter Kaitlin and his friend Bullit (all wearing "Team Julie" t-shirts), applauds Julie as she receives her college degree.
